Will had stormed out of the Wheelers’ house. He tried to get into the game, but Mike and Lucas just judged him. He’d been waiting so long to finally do something together, and still they called it childish and boring. He grabbed his bike, ready to leave, listening as Mike tried to excuse it by saying they just weren’t in the mood that day. The argument wasn’t going well at all. It felt different, and Mike didn’t even have any real arguments—his replies just made him sound stupid and clumsy—until, like a really low blow and without thinking twice, he blurted out, “It’s not my fault you don’t like girls!” and that was enough for everything between them to fall apart.
