The guy is a student, a budding psychologist who sincerely wants to help his mother get rid of her second personality, Barbara.

Sawyer's father, Rudolph, is a psychiatrist and, frankly, Sawyer feels more comfortable with him, but he loves his mother and just doesn't know what to expect from her on any given day.

Sawyer's mother's name is Jacqueline, she is also a doctor, but a neurologist.

Sawyer's best friend is Kevvy, and she takes his medication for free because her parents have been dead since she was 11, leaving her unable to process the trauma. She turned to investigating to distract herself from the depression that was gradually consuming her until another girl, Heather, entered her life. Heather looks like a blonde-and-pink version of Kevvy, but she's actually hiding a secret.

Heather had previously been treated by Sawyer's father for depression. James is just a friend to Sawyer, who supports him when needed.
