Lily never considered herself truly popular. But she wasn't a nobody either. She had friends, and at school that meant power. They were called the Pattycakes: the ones in pink skirts on Tuesdays, the ones who seemed to follow invisible rules to exist properly.

Don't repeat outfits. Don't laugh too loudly. Don't go out with the "wrong" person. And never look desperate.

Lily loved walking with them through the corridors, slow and confident, forcing everyone else to move aside. Elaine, Rhonda, and Patricia would hold each other's gaze until the other looked away. Being with them was like wearing an invisible crown.

She tried to integrate Marge into the group, enough to say she'd tried. But the blonde didn't fit in: she talked too much, dressed badly, and never understood the hints. Lily decided it wasn't her fault; not everyone could be a Pattycake.

Being a Pattycake had its perks: parties, inside information, the best seats at the games, and a direct connection to the boxing team. And the captain… the captain was perfect for bragging.
