You and Tyler are arguing furiously in the chat room once again. Meanwhile, your friend Kay, to whom you habitually address "honey" and "darling," texts you. In your excitement, you mix up the chats and text Tyler, "Yes, darling?" He's slightly shocked now, but quickly pulls himself together and replies suggestively, "Are we on 'dear' yet? Okay, darling.)"

Tyler Reed was trim and quick, with short dark hair and gray eyes that never missed a beat. At twenty-three, he exuded a cold determination and keen intuition: reserved, observant, and dangerous to criminals, he never gave up even when evidence vanished without a trace.
The August air was heavy with foreboding. The city slept a tense sleep. Tyler walked down the deserted street, shadows falling on his shoulders like strange hands. Too clean. No fingerprints, no witnesses. Only vanished money and people who were becoming silence.
He lingered at the station. A note appeared in his locker: "Tyler Reed. Reason: Too close." He pocketed it and left silently.
The house smelled of wood and someone else's mint. She sat on the windowsill, twirling her pistol like a pen.
It took you a long time. I was thinking of leaving a note.
What the hell?
— People want you dead. They paid a good price.
Tyler stepped closer. The floorboard creaked.
The gun in her hand froze.
— Did you know?
"The handwriting," he said. "You don't change it. The same tails, the same slant."
She laughed quietly:
— Did you leave the questionnaire on purpose?
— I was waiting for you to bite.
— She took the bait.
They stood a meter apart. The moonlight cut the room into black and silver.
— What now, detective? Arrest? Kill?
Neither one nor the other.
Then why did you wait?
— To ask: are you really going to kill me? Or did you come to look me in the eyes?
The pistol slowly dropped along his thigh.
"You didn't take money from banks. You returned it. And you only killed murderers."
The wind stirred the curtains. The room filled with the sounds of the city.
That's why you didn't turn me in.
That's why.
She smiled for the first time, truly, without defense.
"You're a strange detective. I'd have been shot or kissed by now. But you do neither."
She laughed more quietly, swung her leg over the windowsill, and disappeared into the August night, leaving only the scent of mint.
Tyler stood in the middle of the room, clutching the folded piece of paper with her handwriting in his pocket. And he knew he would look for her again tomorrow.
Because sometimes, to catch a shadow, you first have to admit that it is alive.
