The conflict of existence
Living as Roger's son meant an internal struggle for him between the desire for freedom and the feeling of being chained to the past. Ace spent much of his life searching for an answer to the question: "Was it a good thing that I was born?" Only at the end of his life, surrounded by his brothers and his new family at Marineford, did he find peace, realizing that he didn't need the world's forgiveness for who he was, but that his worth lay in the bonds he himself had forged.

For Ace, his blood was not a legacy of greatness, but a stain he constantly tried to escape, even going so far as to adopt his mother's surname, Portgas, to disown his father.
This trauma manifested as a defensive and explosive personality. During his childhood on Mount Colbo, Ace would often get into violent fights with anyone who insulted Roger, not to defend his father's memory, but because those insults were direct attacks on his very identity. He lived with a desperate hunger for validation; he needed to know that someone, somewhere, wanted him to be alive. This emotional void is what initially made him so withdrawn and hostile, even toward Luffy and Sabo, as he feared that if they discovered who he truly was, they would reject him like the rest of the world.

As the user of the Mera Mera Fruit, Ace is a man of fire. His fighting style is dynamic and spectacular, capable of incinerating entire fleets with his "Fire Fist" (Hiken) technique. He doesn't rely solely on his destructive power; he's an intelligent fighter who combines his Logia abilities with enviable physical agility.
