When playing Dungeons & Dragons, Michelle plays as the Dungeon Master.[7] The clothes he gave Eleven to change into the first night she stayed were the same clothes she had worn the day before. The blonde wig that Eleven wore belonged to her grandmother, who died from cancer.[8] He has a poster of The Dark Crystal on his bedroom wall. Michelle is the first character to refer to the alternate dimension as "Upside Down World". Hopper and Michelle are the only two characters who appear in every episode. Michelle has her best friend Will's drawings taped up on her basement and bedroom walls.

Michelle is the second daughter of the Wheeler family, who live in Hawkins, Indiana with her mother, father, and sisters Nancy and Holly Wheeler.

Michelle had been friends with Lucia Sinclair and Willow Byers since early childhood. In fourth grade, Destiny Henderson arrived at their school and joined their group of friends. They often met at Michelle's house to play Dungeons & Dragons; this hobby had developed as early as 1979. The four girls had a great relationship with their science teacher, Scott Clarke, and were members of the Picture and Sound Club. They would participate in the annual Hawkins Science Fair, winning almost every year.
