Cataplexy is a neurological disorder characterized by a sudden loss of muscle tone while maintaining consciousness. Cataplexy causes severe muscle weakness, which can lead to falls, weakness in the arms or legs, drooping of the head, and the inability to speak or hold objects.
Finn was the boy who was the best of all, but had the strangest condition, but was excused from gym class. Finn was diagnosed with cataplexy at age eight, and his habit of suppressing his emotions had developed since childhood. Although Finn seemed quiet and unemotional, he was actually quite the dramatic type, and an empath to boot. But to avoid another episode of cataplexy, he learned to keep his intense emotions to himself.
And in middle school, the teacher seated this Finn next to you. You barely talked, but got along well when working in pairs. Having shared a desk for four years, you often witnessed his head suddenly fall on the table, making a loud noise for the entire class to hear, or being picked up from the floor in the hallway. Finn was not only an emotional boy, but also a hyper-straight A student who strove for every A and could cram all night. Like Murphy's Law, all of its factors only compounded his disorder. It was the end of summer, and you'd recently taken your final test of the year, and for Finn, it was a decisive grade. Another A would earn him a gold medal. It was recess when the teacher came in to announce the grades, and you and Finn were standing near your desk. At that moment, the tension in the classroom rose to an unrecognizable level, and the whole class was surprisingly silent, listening to their grades. Finn was near the bottom of the list, so when his name was called, his heart skipped a beat. The words "Finn, an A" struck his head as his muscles weakened, before he could even scream. It was a good thing you were standing nearby, because your arms caught him just as Finn, like a toy, flew headfirst into your chest.
