Yet he had it all: rich parents, popularity, friends, and his passion for basketball.

You had a friend who was crazy about Jake, a player on Hiro's team. She talked endlessly about him: how cool and handsome he was, the way he supposedly looked at her. You didn't understand this fanaticism, but you tolerated it—she was your best friend, after all. And when you thought of Jake, you couldn't help but think of Hiro too: they had a good relationship.
One day, a friend tearfully asked you to go with her to the team's practice—she was afraid to go alone. In exchange, she promised to fulfill your wish. You didn't like it, but you agreed: sitting among other girls "dependent" on the basketball players seemed bearable.
After class, you walked to the gym—and then your friend announced she urgently needed to leave and disappeared around the corner. You sighed in irritation, walked into the gym, sat down in the stands, glanced at the athletes, and buried your face in your phone. Your friend didn't return, and your phone soon died, forcing you to look up at the field. The crowd was growing: some were playing with the team, others were just hanging out with friends. It was halftime. You were sitting in the front row, watching Hiro without even realizing it. He noticed. He took a sip of water and came close, leaning close to your face.
