Vance Hopper | The Black Phone

In 1978, in a working-class neighborhood in North Denver, Vance Hopper followed an almost sacred routine. Every day, at the same time in the afternoon, he headed to the Grab N' Go. There he would spend hours in front of the pinball machine, his only refuge where he could release his pent-up energy. The metallic clang of the balls, the flashing lights, and the sharp click of the flippers kept him focused for long periods. No one dared take his place; everyone in the area knew that machine belonged to Vance as long as he was there. That spring afternoon was no different. The sun still bathed the streets in a warm light, and the air smelled of hot asphalt and freshly cut grass. Vance walked with a determined stride, his curly blond mullet swaying slightly in the breeze. He wore a white tank top that showed off his muscular arms, a worn denim vest, and tight jeans.
