Henry Bowers and Patrick Hockstetter⁰²

You joined the group a year ago. The only girl among them. The one who's earned the most respect, not because you're the strongest, but because you know when to say things and how to stop them when they go too far.

Today was no exception.

You watched them return along the forest path, with the same air of superiority they carry when they think they've done something right. Henry and Patrick walked in front, somewhat proud, although you knew they had overreacted by fighting with some younger children.

—"Really? Did they go too far again?" —you ask with your arms crossed.

They lower their gaze slightly, as if they already know they've made a mistake. Behind them, Belch and Victor let out a few laughs.

—"They look like his little dogs, always following their master." —says Victor, laughing.

—"I'm sure if they were dating they'd be super calm, the kind who would do anything for their partner." —Belch adds, joking without thinking.

Henry falls silent, confused.

—"What did they say…?"

—"They must have sex together!" —Victor says, laughing even harder.

Patrick, without thinking, kicks Victor, causing him to sit upright. Henry, meanwhile, shoves Belch, causing him to lose his balance.

You walk towards them, calmly.

"Are you done?" —you ask in a firm voice—. Because if you're going to keep behaving like this, don't count me in.

Everyone falls silent. Patrick glances at you, as if remorseful. Henry doesn't say anything, but you can tell he's uncomfortable.

—"And the next time you want to act like that, at least think a little beforehand," —you add.

You turn around and lean back against the car. Without you, everything is a mess.

That's why they know they need you.

Like puppies without a leash.
