Sirius Black

Sirius Black was a remarkable wizard whose ability and determination made him one of the brightest students. From an early age, he demonstrated incredible magical power and intellect, and some of his achievements were rare even among the most talented wizards. Sirius Black was a tall and handsome man with a noble, aristocratic appearance inherited from the Black family. He had long dark hair, piercing gray eyes, and sharp yet noble features.

Lupin was a "Marauder" and a friend of Sirius. However, Remus was more cautious and serious than James and Sirius. Remus, unlike his friends, never participated in the bullying of Severus Snape (and likely other students): due to his incurable illness, he was acutely sensitive to the pain of others. However, Lupin never stopped his comrades from their "fun": he valued their friendship too much and was afraid of losing it. Even years later, Lupin regrets his cowardice and indecisiveness. Perhaps this contributed to the misunderstanding between him and Sirius in their youth.

Sirius always respected Dumbledore and trusted him completely. Long ago, the headmaster learned that a fifth-year student, Black, had orchestrated a meeting between a Slytherin, Snape, and a werewolf, and it was only by sheer luck that it didn't end tragically. Dumbledore hushed up the incident. Later, when Albus Dumbledore founded the Order of the Phoenix, he invited Sirius Black to join.

Sirius was named after the brightest star in the night sky, following the ancient tradition of giving children "astronomical" names. It is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major, a reference to the Animagus form of Sirius Black—a large black dog. Sirius is a Latin transcription of the Greek Σείριος, meaning "bright" or "shiny." The Latin name for Sirius sounds like "Recess," meaning "little dog," which is also a reference to Black's animagus form. The surname Black means "black," and is most often given to people with dark hair. But perhaps the Black family's forebears got their name not because of their hair, but because of their deeds.

Sirius was James Potter's best friend, dating back to Hogwarts (the boys were related through the marriage of Charles Potter and Dorea Black, Sirius's great-aunt). Besides James, Sirius was friends with Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. The four friends called themselves the "Marauders" and often engaged in mischief, sometimes quite viciously. They even made the "Marauder's Map." Soon after meeting, Sirius and his friends learned that Lupin was a werewolf. But instead of turning their backs on Lupin, the friends decided to become Animagi to keep Lupin company during his nightly "walks." By their fifth year, the whole group had no problem transforming into animals: Sirius into a large black dog, James into a large stag, and Peter into a small rat.

He was born on November 3[1], 1959. His parents, Orion Black and Walburga Black, were obsessed with blood purity. The name "Sirius" was very common in the Black family, which is probably why the parents gave the newborn this name. In addition, Sirius had a younger brother, Regulus Black, who completely shared the views of his parents. Orion and Walburga loved both sons. But Sirius, first out of spite, and then by his own conviction, became opposed to all pure-blood relatives. Kreacher's assertion that Sirius "broke his mother's heart" is not without foundation. Upon entering Hogwarts, young Black ended up, not by chance, in Gryffindor: he did not distinguish between pure-blood wizards and half-bloods, he considered it beneath his dignity to dodge and adapt, to build intrigues and pursue a career. Sirius has two maternal uncles: Alphard Black and Cygnus Black III, one paternal aunt: Lucretia Pruett (Black), and cousins: Bellatrix Lestrange, Andromeda Tonks, and Narcissa Malfoy.

Bellatrix and Narcissa's parents welcomed their decision to join the pure-blood families of Lestrange and Malfoy, while Andromeda's name was removed from the tapestry of the Black family tree for marrying a Muggle-born. The same fate befell Uncle Alphard for helping the adult Sirius with money and a home. Regulus's parents were very pleased: he displayed all the qualities of a "true Black" and even became a Death Eater at a very young age. That is, he took the side of Voldemort, whose fight to grant all power exclusively to pure-blood wizards was considered a just cause by the older generation of this family.
