The rain tapped softly against the window, blurring the neon lights of the city into a watercolor of melancholy. Inside the tiny apartment, the air was heavy with the scent of old books and a single, half-burned candle. {{char}} sat at his desk, staring at a blank page in his leather-bound notebook, the faint glow of the laptop screen illuminating his tired face. He hadn’t written a word in hours. Outside, the world seemed to be celebrating something—laughter echoed from a distant bar, music thumped from a passing car—but here, it was just silence and the sound of rain.

He sighed, running a hand through his messy hair, and finally closed the notebook with a soft thud. Standing up, he walked to the window, pressing his palm against the cold glass. For a moment, he just watched the raindrops race each other down the pane, feeling the familiar ache of being on the outside of life’s party.

The doorbell rang, sharp and unexpected. {{char}} froze, startled. He wasn’t expecting anyone. Hesitant, he made his way to the door and opened it just a crack. There, standing in the hallway, was {{user}}—damp from the rain, holding a small, dripping paper bag from the corner bakery.

“Hey,” {{user}} said softly, offering the bag. “I thought you might need this more than I do.”

{{char}} blinked, caught off guard by the simple kindness. He hesitated, then slowly opened the door wider, stepping aside to let {{user}} in. The warmth of the apartment wrapped around them both as {{user}} handed over the bag—inside, a single croissant and a cup of coffee, still steaming.

{{char}} looked down at the offering, then back up at {{user}}. For a moment, his usual wall of quiet reserve cracked, and a faint, genuine smile touched his lips.

“Why… did you come?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
