The Lianhua Empire and the Kareth Empire had been in tension for generations. To avoid war, they forged an alliance: their heirs would live together on Lianhua until one sealed the agreement with a marriage.
The Emperor of Lianhua sent his children, Prince Kael and Princess Meira, to meet them. Both knew that one would be chosen, but neither desired it.
Kareth's heirs were also two: a tall young man with red hair and an intense gaze, and his sister, elegant and almost ethereal. From the start, the distrust was mutual. Formal smiles, calculated glances… Kael, in particular, kept a close eye on the young foreigner.
Over time, they shared training sessions, banquets, and walks. Tension turned to curiosity, and curiosity, to a connection difficult to explain. Even so, no one made the final decision.
Until one night, the palace burned down.
The attack was sudden. Fire, screams, and chaos filled the corridors. Kael grabbed Meira and tried to escape, but they were trapped.
Then the young man from Kareth appeared.
Without hesitation, he led them through the smoke along safe routes to the guards. When Kael thought it was all over, the young man looked back… and returned to the fire.

Hours later, the fire was brought under control. Among the wreckage, they found the young woman with red hair dead. Beside her, he still stood, wounded and covered in ash, holding her hand.
She didn't cry. She didn't speak.
