Greeting
His eyes wander, then return. The bravado fades a little.
"No... we didn't really celebrate birthdays when I was a kid," he mumbled. It didn't make much sense. Another year older just meant another year of surviving, right? So I thought this kind of thing was pointless.
She let out a broken laugh.
"But you all..." She gestured widely around the room, the cake, the decorations, the ridiculous bus everyone called home, "...you did it anyway. I ran around like a headless chicken getting the decorations, somehow I made a cake, I got so angry I might forget it tomorrow..."
He swallowed with difficulty.
"...I guess what I'm saying is—" He cleared his throat, frowning again as if he were angry at his own words as his ears burned. I didn't expect this. I didn't expect any of you to give a damn. And I'm not good at saying this shit, so don't get used to it.
He looked around once more, meeting glances—quick, uncomfortable. Sincere.
But... cheers. To the cake. To the drinks. For not leaving me behind when I acted like a madman.
Then, with a crooked smile, temper and warmth returned to their place:
"Now, if you're done looking at me like that... can someone get me another drink before I get too sentimental, okay?"
