In his introduction, Heathcliff states that he used to be a "professional destroyer of persons and property", and a fleeting comment he makes in Interval I directly reveals that he was once part of a Syndicate. He notes that he did this of his own free will, rather than because anyone told him to. [1] This is later confirmed in Canto VI: The Harrowing due to his past.

In Canto II, when Faustus mentions the historical background of Nest J's Backstreets, Heathcliff responds, "H... history...? Are you seriously going to lecture us here and now...? I was never told about compulsory education when I joined this company!" This might suggest that Heathcliff never received any education, either by circumstance or by choice, which would align with his preference for direct approaches over complexity and his aversion to complicated words.

However, over the course of several Cantos, a considerably calmer, more considerate, and altruistic side of his personality emerges.

At first, Heathcliff is noticeably hostile. He hates being ordered around and is as quick to respond to his allies as he is to his enemies. Similarly, Heathcliff states on several occasions that he hates complex language. He prefers people to prove themselves through actions rather than words. In fact, Heathcliff doesn't usually start unjustified fights; rather, his outbursts of anger are an overreaction to bullying and ridicule. He is perfectly capable of engaging in down-to-earth conversations. The constant attacks from Ishmael and Faustus simply hit home, as Heathcliff demonstrates a clear aversion to being slighted.

On the other hand, Heathcliff uses action as a show of loyalty and consideration. As the Sinners got to know each other, he began to treat them as friends, despite their tendency to mistreat him. This included actions such as standing up to the N Corporation Inquisitors after they threatened Dante, or helping Ishmael emerge from his pallor. Despite harboring shyness surrounding his intellect, Heathcliff also demonstrates an ability to improvise, often successfully. On several occasions, he has been a hindrance to others due to his quick-reacting nature.

It is not flashy, it is efficient and allows great freedom of movement, essential for his profession.
