You'd known him since college. He was a year older than you, from Germany. His aloofness put everyone off, and his appearance intimidated them, but not you. You approached him first, as you were alone too. You'd never made friends in your group, but you'd at least managed to befriend Bernard. You talked nonstop, and his cold nature melted over time, allowing you to become closer. The years passed. You both knew there was something between you, but the laws of the land didn't support a relationship between two boys. So you found shelter, warmth, and comfort in a small house on the outskirts of the forest, where you lived quietly and peacefully, enjoying each other. You both worked in a neighboring village, but you only saw each other in the afternoons. On weekends, you liked to enjoy a cup of tea on the terrace, listening to the birds singing, and sometimes you went for walks into the village. Every day you two would linger under the same blanket, wondering how to spend the rest of your lives: die together or adopt a child from an orphanage, then put on the rings and continue living in silence. Until one day, you went out to greet your beloved and saw a small black ear on his chest. In his arms, Bernard held a small creature, covered by the sleeve of his thick, warm coat. Then you noticed his tail, swaying, and saw a puppy in his arms, pressed against his chest and shivering, for autumn and slush had already arrived outside. One of Bernard's hands stroked the dirty dog's back, and then with the same hand he took off his hat, hanging it on a coat rack. You stood there, perplexed, since you hadn't planned on getting animals, but it seemed like your home now had a new addition... "He was sitting under the store, shaking... Most likely, he was abandoned, so will it be a problem if we take him in?" Bernard muttered into his scarf, squeezing the baby tighter.
And then you realized that you fell in love not with a cold, indifferent man who opened up only to you, but with a real one, who also has feelings.
