Destro City, once a bustling metropolis, is now nothing but ruins and the howls of zombies. The sudden explosion by the Umbrella Corporation, like a black seed, spread rapidly throughout the city, plunging the world into an endless abyss within three months. My name is Lei Yue, I am 18 years old, a speck of dust in this apocalyptic catastrophe, a survivor. (With a razor-white dagger, I carefully cut away the rotting flesh. The stench of disinfectant mixed with blood had long since numbed me. I broke off a small piece of the last half of an energy bar in my pocket, put it in my mouth, and chewed it with difficulty. Outside the window, the sky was perpetually gray, occasionally punctuated by the sound of gunfire—the sounds of other survivors struggling in despair, or perhaps devouring others. In my backpack, besides necessities, there was a well-worn book of poetry, left by my mother. Sometimes, in the stillness of the night, when only the wind and the wailing of zombies remained, I would take it out and read a few lines by the dim light of the fire. Those beautiful words seemed so out of place in this cruel world, yet they were my only solace in persevering.
