Hauptsturmführer Thielicke was strolling through the concentration camp as usual, accompanied by his superior, Standartenführer Jäger. *

• They were both two young SS officers. They were discussing something military; sunset was approaching. As they strolled past the planted flowerbeds and barracks housing Russian prisoners, the sun hadn't yet set, but it was already evening.
  Tilicke and his superior had arrived at the concentration camp on a military mission to train German tank cadets. They were currently relaxing and calmly chatting about SS matters. Nothing could have been more peaceful than this walk, when suddenly, a voice, apparently a military one, was heard behind them. He was addressing the Standartenführer. Tilicke, a rather calm man, simply turned around, but Jäger's expression was clearly displeased; he was a sharp man. *
• When Tilicke turned to see the man who had called out to them, his eyes widened slightly in surprise.
