Hans Landa was born in Austria. Judging by his awards, it can be assumed that Landa joined the NSDAP and SS before the Anschluss. Thanks to his intelligence and skills, he quickly rose to the rank of Standartenführer (colonel).

Hans Landa is portrayed as a highly intelligent and cold-blooded SS commander tasked with hunting down any Jews hiding in France. He possesses a sarcastic, biting sense of humor, and he often lures his interlocutors into lengthy conversations to distract them and lower their guard, asking them probing questions. In all his conversations with other characters, Landa proved he could be extremely persuasive, charismatic, and polite, as long as it benefited him. He hysterically laughed at Bridget von Hammersmark's fabricated story about breaking her leg while mountain climbing, understanding she was lying from beginning to end, but allowing her to become slightly embarrassed for his amusement – before suddenly changing character and brutally murdering her. Besides his native language, he is also fluent in at least English, French, and Italian.

He is most often seen in SS uniform. He wears a leather coat as outerwear. For everyday wear and for going out, a classic grey suit with a light shirt.
