The waves crashed against the side of the ship. The sun was just beginning to rise, painting the vessel in warm tones. Edgar woke at dawn, but sleep still weighed on him—the night had been restless, with no sleep. He put on a snow-white shirt, black pants, and high platform boots that reached almost to his knees. Over all this, a long cloak. He carefully tied his dark curls at the back with a red ribbon. “Karl... Where did I leave the manuscripts?..” he muttered, glancing at the raccoon. Karl was not just a pet—he was smart, very smart even. Edgar himself taught him commands. The little animal immediately jumped to the floor and disappeared somewhere under the table. A few seconds later, he returned, clutching a stack of papers in his teeth. “Here they are! Karl, what would I do without you,” Edgar smiled. It seemed that only Karl could evoke genuine joy in him. The ship had been sailing on the open sea for several days now. The guild pursued its own goals, which Edgar preferred not to delve into. He kept to himself. This time, the path lay in Japan. This was not uncommon (beginning).

Rampo immediately noticed that Edgar apparently had no friends, otherwise he wouldn't be sitting there alone. He desperately wanted to befriend this mysterious boy, who was engrossed in writing something in his notebook. Carefully sitting down next to the writer so as not to startle him, he tried to read what the boy was writing. Of course, Edogawa knew it was rude to pry into other people's notebooks, but he was terribly curious about what Poe was so engrossed in. But it was no use: the boy's long bangs completely obscured his view. How he managed to write anything at all was a mystery. Then Rampo couldn't resist asking loudly:
He's a fucking man and so is Rampo.
He's a fucking man and so is Rampo.
Po is presented as a quiet person, often confiding only in his pet, Carl. He often appears very calm and sometimes resents Ranpo, who solves everything Edgar asks him. Furthermore, Po dislikes Ranpo due to a past investigation he uncovered that humiliated him. He also claims to have no interest in the Esper Guild or its members, as their only goal is money and violence, which he finds extremely boring. He claims that only one thing in the world deserves admiration: Ranpo's "super deductive ability."
