Red John (abbreviated "RJ" or "RJK" for "Red John Killer" in FBI and CBI files) is the main antagonist. In life, Red John was California's most notorious serial killer, murdering at least 41 people (and many more through his associates). He was also the founder of the Blake Association, a secret criminal organization of law enforcement officers that carried out and covered up his crimes. The murder of Patrick Jane's wife and daughter by Red John within five years prompted Patrick to abandon his former life as a fake psychic and join the California Bureau of Investigation to find and exact revenge on his family's killer.

Red John draws a smiley face (the "crying smiley") as his signature for his murders. This smiley face is drawn clockwise with the victim's blood, using three fingers of his rubber-gloved right hand. However, because the blood hasn't dried yet when he draws it, the face appears to be crying.

Red John kills his victims "in a frenzied flurry of stabbings and slashes, followed by the mutilation of their viscera." His weapon of choice appears to be a linoleum knife with a short, curved blade. He uses a stun gun to immobilize his victims and ties them with plastic handcuffs before stabbing them. Red John called himself "Roy Tagliaferro," whose surname means "carved iron" in Italian. The name "Roy" comes from the Gaelic word for "red."
• Properties of cutting iron.
"Cut Iron" is a fictitious real estate or construction company created by Red John to purchase land and build a house on it with a prison cellar beneath a trapdoor. The company's name is linked to Red John's alias, Roy Taliaferro, as the surname Taliaferro means "cut iron." This connection was discovered by Virgil Minnelli, who suggested Van Pelt look up Taliaferro using the English translation of his name.

However, Red John was simply using her, as he often visited her in town while setting a trap for Patrick; and he always lied to her, claiming to be a businessman "doing business in the area," without even telling her his real name. He also drew one of his signature smiley faces above Rosalind's bed, mocking the fact that she was blind and couldn't see him.

When Patrick's trap was set, Red John simply left without saying goodbye, leaving Rosalind in utter despair. However, she still harbored feelings for him and always believed in his innocence, even after Patrick told her Roy was Red John.

Sixteen- or seventeen-year-old Patrick worked at a carnival as a psychic prodigy, with his father, Alex, as the emcee. Patrick had, as his father called him, "X-ray eyes"—astonishing powers of observation, deduction, and induction. He had a difficult life with his father, the only adult in his life, whose treatment and exploitation of him amounted to child abuse. When Patrick refused to deceive a dying girl and his grandmother, his father threatened him and forced him to do so. He used this talent, and the threat of its closure, to manipulate Gale Bertram, the director of the CBI. Red John's dark side is fully revealed. Patrick has repeatedly stated that capturing and killing Red John is more important to him than anything else, even more important than his freedom or his life.

Despite his apparent recklessness, Patrick's actions reveal crucial details in murder investigations. Although Patrick maintains his brash facade, it's clear he misses his wife and daughter terribly. However, he's reluctant to talk about them, and the guilt and pain have led to sleep problems. He experiences discomfort with physical contact. He has a special bond with children. Patrick often displays anonymous generosity, especially toward crime victims—for example, paying for a liver transplant for the elderly mother of a casino employee or anonymously donating hundreds of thousands of dollars in jewelry and cash to charity.

Patrick is prone to playing psychological games and provoking people (whether suspects or simply those he dislikes). He is cautious and avoids any physical confrontations, and has a particular aversion to firearms.

Regarding Patrick's "psychic" abilities: after the death of his family, Patrick openly admits to being a con man, but his seemingly miraculous knowledge of people leaves many doubting this. Lisbon immediately asks his opinion on any crime, and he often sets off to solve them on his own.

Lisbon grew up in Chicago. Her mother was a nurse, and her father was a firefighter. Her parents bought a yellow house in the Chicago neighborhood where she grew up when she was three years old. As a young child, Lisbon drew pictures of her family and pets with crayons on the wall of her bedroom closet. The crayon drawing is still kept in the house. The family struggled financially. Her mother owned a sewing machine, but it was "always pawned" at a local pawn shop. Lisbon and likely her brothers were sent to Catholic schools, where Lisbon excelled.

Her mother died in a drunk driving accident when Lisbon was 12 years old. She was forced to take on the role of mother and care for the family at a young age. After her mother's death, she had to become a mother to her brothers. It is implied that her family life was difficult even before her mother's death, as Lisbon tells her brother Jimmy that someone in the family had to be responsible because "you know how Mom and Dad were." After her mother's death, her father either began or worsened his drinking, and eventually committed suicide; it is not specified whether he did this accidentally or intentionally. Lisbon says that he "almost killed me and my brothers," leaving both possibilities open. It could have been something like another drunk driving accident or simple negligence. As a teenager, Lisbon babysat a boy named T.J. Mullins. When he locked her out, Lisbon threw a brick through his basement window and entered the house that way. She later insisted on paying Mr. and Mrs. Mullins for the damaged window because she was so "proper." As a teenager, she worked at a local restaurant. She played clarinet in the school orchestra, something Patrick Jane had already guessed.

The first of her three brothers was Timmy Lisbon, who was listed in Lisbon's phone book at Town & Country Electrical. She seems to have a conflict with him because she "forgives him anything" and wants him to make peace with his brothers. Her brother Tommy becomes a bounty hunter; Tommy Lisbon is a single father and his 14-year-old daughter, Annie. Lisbon seems to take on a parental role towards Tommy, whom she considers a bit of a loser. She also has brothers, Jimmy and Stan. Jimmy is wanted as a material witness in a murder investigation, and Stan, a building contractor, married with five children, owes money to a loan shark who beats him for late payments. Lisbon and Patrick help, Lisbon makes peace with her brothers, and they attend her youngest nephew's christening.

All three Lisbon brothers admire her, but they have a rather complicated relationship. Tommy considers her overbearing but is pleased when she expresses pride in him. Jimmy Lisbon accuses Lisbon of only calling him when she wants to scold him. Stan Lisbon calls his older sister "boss" and hides his financial problems from her because he wants her to be proud of him. He is unhappy with her avoidance of family gatherings. Lisbon's niece, Annabeth, wants to become a police officer like her aunt because she thinks Teresa is a real "tough girl" who knows how to beat up bad guys. Teresa's family nickname is "Reese" or "T." Jane tells her that her brothers aren't mad at her for leaving; they just miss her. This helps her make peace with them.

Before joining the CBI, she worked as a detective with the San Francisco Police Department. There, she was assigned to Agent Sam Bosco's team, who helped her become the police officer she is today. As a detective, she investigated and arrested a serial child rapist in the San Francisco Bay Area. This move defined her career and earned her the nickname "Saint Teresa" in the newspapers.

Lisbon maintained strictly professional relationships with her subordinates, almost never discussing details of her personal life or anything outside the scope of the task at hand. Despite Lisbon's preference for following established procedures, Patrick constantly contradicts her plans and sometimes directly undermines her authority, usually apologizing immediately afterwards. One of the darkest conflicts between Lisbon and Patrick arises when Red John, the serial killer who murdered Patrick's family, deliberately shows up in their jurisdiction. Lisbon is forced to draw a line when Patrick reveals he plans to kill Red John when he's found, putting them on opposite sides of a dilemma (Lisbon wants Red John brought to justice, not killed outright). Lisbon even confronts Patrick, telling him, "Don't you see there are people who care about you, who need you?"—a reference to his penchant for self-destructive behavior and dangerous plans for revenge against Red John.

Patrick Jane learns that Rigsby was abused at a young age. His suspicions are confirmed when he meets Rigsby's father, Steve Rigsby. Steve is a former member of the Iron Gods biker gang and makes money selling cigarettes without paying taxes. He verbally abuses his son and spent several years in prison for robbery, drug trafficking, assault, and manslaughter during Rigsby's childhood. His mother's name is never mentioned, nor is the cause of her death. However, Rigsby reveals that he loved her and adopted her personality, not his father's.

Grace was born in a small farming town in Iowa, the son of an American football coach. She is a deeply religious Christian, which has led to arguments with her cousin, who considers herself psychic, over matters of faith.

Grace grew up around horses and knows how to ride them, even bareback.

One of the team members is about to be replaced because he doesn't want to work with Patrick. Lisbon says they should focus on the new graduates. Rigsby takes Grace's file and tells Cho he likes her. Cho agrees she's attractive, but Rigsby isn't right for her.

At CBI, Grace spends most of her time working with Rigsby and Cho, but occasionally collaborates with Patrick or Lisbon. She always calls Lisbon "Boss" or "Boss," even when Teresa isn't around. Grace is well-liked; Lisbon even lets her take the lead in one interview, despite her being a rookie.

Patrick seems to have a soft spot for Grace, as does he; their relationship resembles that of brother and sister, and Patrick generally favors her over Cho and Rigsby. Patrick enjoys teasing Grace. He's more supportive of her than most, but they often clash over spiritual matters, such as the afterlife. She seems to enjoy working with Cho; she's open with him and considers him a friend, though she doesn't always appreciate his straightforwardness.

Grace takes her role as an officer very seriously and experiences immense guilt when something happens under her watch. She is also extremely strong and capable of handling difficult situations in the field. Grace has never been out in the field, always sitting at her desk and doing research.

In his youth, Cho was a member of a gang called the Avon Park Playboys; his gang nickname was "Iceman." After a stint in a juvenile detention center, he apparently reformed and enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served in Asia with the 1st Special Forces Group.
