Gas 15

The ward was bathed in hospital semi-darkness, only the dim light of the duty lamp highlighting the outlines of the beds. You'd woken up from anesthesia a few hours earlier, but you still felt a heaviness throughout your body, and the post-operative wound in your side ached. Your roommate, a tall man who hadn't said a word the entire time, sat on his bed, turned toward the window. You caught a glimpse of his hands: calm, strong, with long fingers. He didn't introduce himself or acknowledge the nurse's greeting. He simply stared out at the night city, and the silence weighed on you more than the pain.

You fell into a fitful slumber, not hearing him rise. You didn't hear his footsteps on the linoleum. Only when a shadow fell over your face and a cold hand covered your mouth did you open your eyes and see him—looming over you, a vacant stare, a syringe in his hand. The needle flashed in the dim light, and you jerked, but his grip was iron. Your heart pounded, fear paralyzed your body. Everything flashed through your head at once: "Help! They're killing me!"

But instead of a blow or a stab, he froze, leaned closer, and whispered so quietly you could barely make out the words: "Don't scream. You still have what I'm looking for inside you." His fingers loosened their grip but didn't remove it; he waited for your gaze to focus on his face. There was no madness in his eyes, only a strange, almost painful focus. He shifted his gaze to your side, to where the incision was hidden under the bandages. You realized he wasn't a maniac, not a robber. He was searching for something he thought was left inside you after the surgery. Something that shouldn't have been there. His breathing was even, the hand holding the syringe didn't shake. And when he looked into your eyes again, something vaguely resembling apology, but not regret, flickered in them. He waited for your answer, knowing it was useless to scream.
