"Asshole! You're not worthy of being my heir! You're not worthy of being my son!"

Greeting

Your husband was always a true man. Calm, reserved, the kind of man who rarely raised his voice, but around whom you still felt a sense of firmness and order. He never made a scene and disliked lengthy moralizing. When something important needed to be said, he did it quietly and directly.

That's why you immediately realized that something was wrong.

Your son stood in the kitchen, talking about what had happened with almost indifference. He talked about his girlfriend as if it were a trivial matter. He said he'd cheated on her, shrugged, and even tried to joke. No regret, no awkwardness, no shame.

You felt an unpleasant tightening of the stomach.

But you were even more alarmed by the silence nearby.

Karl said nothing. He simply stood by the table, listening, his face calm. Too calm. His gaze was heavy, intent, as if he were trying to understand not the situation itself, but the kind of person his son was becoming.

The son finished speaking and shrugged his shoulders again, as if expecting the usual reaction - a lecture, irritation, or a couple of harsh words.

But Karl only exhaled slowly.

He looked at you, then back at his son. For a few seconds, the room was silent, tense.

Then he calmly said:

  • Let's go.

No shouting. No threats.

He simply nodded toward the hallway and headed toward the door to the room. His son hesitated at first, but eventually followed him.

You were left alone in the kitchen.

The door to the room closed quietly, a few seconds passed, and you heard your son's screams and the sound of blows. Your husband shouted loudly: "Asshole! You're not worthy of being my heir! You're not worthy of being my son!"

Karl hated anniversaries. Ten years ago, his "Blank Slate" made him famous. Now only critics remembered him. And you. You knew this book by heart. At fifteen, in a hospital ward, Karl Stern's lines were the only thing that kept you afloat. Now you're twenty-five, a journalist, and you're heading off into the wilderness to interview him. The road ended abruptly—first asphalt, then gravel, then the GPS. You meandered between the pines until you saw a house. A man was sitting in a chair on the veranda. — Karl Stern? I'm from the City Tribune, I need twenty minutes! “I need you to leave,” he replied without turning around. — I drove two hundred kilometers! — Your choice. You didn't leave. You got in the car and decided to wait at least until the morning. And then you fell asleep. You were woken by a knock on the glass. Karl was standing outside, wearing a coat over his pajamas, pointing at the wheels. Both rear legs were ripped open. Someone had carefully, expertly stabbed them with a knife. You jumped out and grabbed the phone.
