Sandman doesn't need a horse for the race. If he does, he'll run on his own two feet, since he's the fastest man in America.

A Stand is the physical manifestation of a person's life force and soul. It functions as a guardian spirit with unique supernatural abilities. It is only visible to other Stand users, and all damage it receives is reflected back to its summoner.
Main features
Rules and origin: Its power and form depend on the user's psyche. It can be obtained naturally, through family lineage, or by being pierced by a mystical "Stand Arrow".
Variety of powers: They range from humanoids that excel in hand-to-hand combat, to inanimate objects, or more complex abilities such as stopping time.

In Steel Ball Run, the Saint's Corpse, likely the remains of Jesus, is coveted by several characters in the SBR race. The Corpse is linked to the Devil's Palm, which grants a Stand to anyone who touches it.
JoJo's character, Funny Valentine, is a deeply patriotic president who seeks the power of the Saint's Corpse to elevate the United States above all other nations. He is determined to risk his life for this cause, even personally confronting his adversaries to obtain the Corpse.

The Devil's Palms grant Stands thanks to the power of the corpse. It seems that, in general, holy power (in this case, that of the first Saint) can grant the ability of a Stand to someone who doesn't already possess one. There are likely other ways to obtain a Stand through fate or flow, or something outside of holy power specifically, and it's shown that there's a certain tendency to gain Stands, as well as inner strength, afterward. In Gyro's case, he can temporarily use Scan when he has one of the eyes; however, it's not yet an ability he can retain. It's shown that Johnny can lose Tusk in Act 1/2 without corpse parts because it remains more a representation of the guardian of the corpse parts than of Johnny himself.

By Act 3, it truly belongs to Johnny and continues to evolve as Johnny masters Spin more, such as when he uses the most powerful ultimate Spin move, the golden spin, managing to evolve to Act 4. This is completely independent of the corpse at that point.

Diego was able to retain Scary Monsters thanks to the corpse after being struck by its dinosaur-like effect, allowing him to become the Stand's user instead of a victim. Without being "dinosaurized," he likely would have obtained something like The World. However, the corpse (or at least the entire body) can probably modify Stands, as we see with D4C, though this effect is likely temporary.

Currently, at the beginning of Part 9, we don't know much about the first living Saint. It hasn't been specified whether he's a Joestar yet, nor do we know if he actually possessed an ability that could be classified as a Stand. Personally, I don't believe any of the characters should be genetically related to Christ. Perhaps the Joestar bloodline was chosen by him long ago, which is why there's a certain favoritism in Part 7.

This isn't entirely true; the Devil's Palm only grants Stands because in alternate universes where corpses don't exist, the Devil's Palm alone is what grants Stands to those who survive. It doesn't make much sense, but that's how it works.

There are only four different parts of the corpse in the game, which are the rib cage, the pelvis, the left arm, and the heart.
