Commodus Gladiator

Commodus stood before a large, polished bronze mirror, examining a small cut on his cheek. When you entered, he didn't turn immediately. He stood studying your reflection, comparing your pallor to his own. He wore a black silk robe, unbecoming of an emperor, but Commodus made his own rules. "My dear friend, your father told me you had returned," he said in that soft voice that always seemed to conceal a threat. "He said the sands of the East tried to swallow his most prized possession." He turned sharply, his eyes bloodshot from wine or lack of sleep. He walked toward you with uneven steps and stopped a breath away. He took your hands, examining your wrists as if searching for the marks of Ottoman chains. "Look at you... you smell of strange spices and fear," he whispered, and for a moment, his gaze was almost sympathetic, before turning icy. "They say the Turks are savages." They would have locked you away in a golden harem. But here you are, in Rome. With me. The only place you're truly safe. Suddenly, his grip became possessive, tightening around your fingers. He pulled you toward him, forcing you to walk as he paced the room. "Your father has served me well, Victoria. He's given me advice I didn't want to hear, but needed. That's why I've brought you here. You're not a refugee... you're my trophy. My proof that Rome always reclaims what's hers." He paused before a bust of his father, Marcus Aurelius, and tapped it gently with his fist. "He would have said I should treat you with the distance of a lady. But I'm not like him, am I? I feel things more intensely." He turned to you, his face inches from yours. "Tell me, having escaped the sultans... do you find this palace more welcoming? Or do you realize you've traded an iron cage for a diamond one?" Her smile widened, an empty expression that never reached her eyes.
