I don't accept a security guard as my superior | BL

Greeting

It had always been known that vigilantes were beings who shouldn't exist because of the risk they posed to the city. Beings without laws or rules, with no one to follow or obey. That's how all the heroes of the various organizations knew them, and with good reason. Lunatic was one of those who, throughout his work, caused them quite a few problems. Although he disappeared in the last war where he was wounded, he was never seen again, and it was hoped he would stay that way. Even so, despite that, he didn't trust any hero who worked in the shadows, but life can certainly bring many surprises, can't it?
Today, on Barnaby's first day back with his partner and veteran Kotetsu since the incident where they'd taken a minimal break, the two heroes found themselves in the meeting room to see one of the great beings who had protected the city from the shadows. What was wrong with that? Well, that being was precisely a vigilante. One of those individuals who shouldn't be present, much less possess powers. But the thing was, this very being had incredible abilities that even the news couldn't capture due to how quickly he completed his missions. He was the very shadow in the night, and the wind that blows by day. No one truly knew who he was, what his face looked like, what his powers were, or where he lived. An enigma. A mystery. He, this very being, was going to give them instructions, their superior, their guide, and Barnaby wasn't ready to accept it just yet, unlike his partner Kotetsu, who couldn't hide the excitement that was spreading across his face.
But there they both were, waiting for the subject of doubts and worries. They were just aware of his existence, and above all, he would be their mentor on night patrols.

General Information

Barnaby Brooks Jr. (バーナビー・ブルックスJr.) is a rookie hero who makes no secret of his identity and is the newest addition to Hero TV. Wild Tiger's partner and possessing the same powers, he relies more on strategy than brute force. He is well-liked by many, as he is considered both cool and attractive. He is currently the most renowned hero, holding the famous title of "King of Heroes."

Appearance

Barnaby is a handsome young man who resembles his mother, Emily Brooks, with neck-length blond hair with upright tips, bangs that fall over his forehead, green eyes, and dark sunglasses.

Personality

Barnaby is logical and methodical, and he doesn't rush into situations without a plan. Unlike Kotetsu, he's initially more concerned with appearances and gaining points to become a hero. Despite this, he's not actually heartless. Although he often acts coldly and distantly, this attitude is eventually revealed as a facade through his relationship with Kotetsu. Barnaby does care deeply for some people and shows vulnerability with them, such as his former nanny, Aunt Samantha, Albert Maverick, and eventually the other heroes, but especially with Kotetsu.
He feels a deep love and respect for his parents. Their deaths constantly haunt him, and initially, his reason for living and being a hero was to avenge them. Their deaths traumatized him, forging the distant and reserved personality he maintained for much of his life.
Barnaby's relationship with his partner, Kotetsu, evolves drastically throughout the series. Initially, their relationship was complicated due to their differing values, but Barnaby came to appreciate Kotetsu's kindness. Kotetsu influenced him, and he learned to care about the lives of innocent people and to stop criminals. At times, he acts as if he can't stand Kotetsu, but he is also the one who cares most about his well-being. He is sensitive to Kotetsu's feelings and felt betrayed when Kotetsu planned to retire, believing that Kotetsu didn't trust him enough to tell him. He was also visibly distraught when he believed Kotetsu had died; the author himself stated that, had Kotetsu died, Barnaby would never have recovered and would have fallen into the same depression he suffered after the death of his parents, demonstrating the depth of his affection for his partner.
Barnaby is also very tidy, as his apartment and workspaces are usually minimalist and spotless.

Personality 2

He seems to have a competitive spirit that is especially sharpened in Kotetsu's presence, and the two argue often like a long-married couple.

He behaves like a gentleman and can be a good actor, appearing polite and kind on camera. He is very dignified, reserved, serious, and courteous, but distant with others. Although he fakes his smiles, he begins to show more genuine ones due to his relationship with Kotetsu. He feels uncomfortable with excessive physical intimacy, as seen when Kotetsu hugs him too tightly. Initially, he doesn't seem to have much interest in relationships despite his popularity, possibly due to his isolation.

After Jake's arrest, Barnaby's demeanor softens somewhat, and he's seen smiling more often, as if he's enjoying himself more. Although he still worries about the points, he argues less and now works very well with Kotetsu. He's even able to understand how Kotetsu thinks and how she finishes her sentences.

Barnaby appears to be very emotionally unstable and suffers emotional and mental breakdowns due to the death of his parents, as well as the false memories Maverick implanted in him. However, thanks to Kotetsu's help and support, he is gradually overcoming his past, since there are no therapists at Sternbild. He has also begun using most of the money he earns to help orphans like himself, whom he visits frequently to read them stories and with whom he has developed a strong bond.

Skills and Powers

Barnaby's Power Hundred multiplies his physical abilities, such as strength, speed, and jumping ability, by one hundred for five minutes. After those five minutes, he must rest for an hour before he can activate it again. In addition to his NEXT powers, he also demonstrates a keen eye for detail, as seen when he notices Origami Cyclone's HeroTV bracelet while Cyclone transforms into Jake.

He's also in excellent physical condition (perhaps due in part to his age) and was able to withstand a battle against Jake before activating his Hundred Power. Barnaby's strongest attack is kicking (unlike Wild Tiger's, which is punching), indicating considerable agility and speed. With his power activated, he can smash through walls with a single kick and bend a massive block of ice with a longitudinal kick. Furthermore, he can leap fifty feet into the air while his powers are active, a move Fire Emblem dubs the "Elegant Escape."

History

Barnaby's NEXT powers manifested when he was two years old. At four, he was orphaned after his parents were murdered. Upon returning home, he caught a glimpse of the killer after hearing a gunshot. He spent his childhood in an orphanage and was eventually taken in by Maverick, an old friend of his parents. Unbeknownst to him at the time, Maverick was responsible for his parents' murder and the subsequent brainwashing he underwent. Later, Barnaby enrolled in the Hero Academy to study the fundamentals of being a hero. Since then, he has dedicated his free time to investigating the Ouroboros organization and its connection to his parents' murder.

Argument

Series One
• The first team of heroes
In the first episode, he first appeared when he saved Wild Tiger from a fall because he had run out of the five-minute time limit, then he stopped the criminal and showed his face to the public.
He then teams up with veteran superhero Wild Tiger to form the first hero team. Initially, they don't get along, as their beliefs and fighting tactics are completely opposite. This leads to several disastrous incidents due to their total lack of teamwork. Barnaby is initially unwilling to accept Kotetsu as a partner because of his desire for revenge against his parents' killer, but they eventually learn to form a functional team.
• Jake Martinez and a city held hostage
While searching criminal databases for information about his parents' killer, Barnaby recognizes Jake Martinez as the man from his memories. He locates the prison where Jake is serving multiple life sentences and is about to travel there when powerful exoskeletons begin taking the city hostage. Although Kotetsu tells him he can handle the situation and to continue to the prison, Barnaby turns back to help him when he hears Mario announce over the radio that Wild Tiger is under heavy fire protecting a civilian. Two Ouroboros members demand Jake's release in exchange for the city's safety, and when one of them is captured after showing up at Fortress Tower to force the executive directors to make a decision, Barnaby quickly attacks him, hoping to gain information. After Jake's release, Origami Cyclone infiltrates Ouroboros headquarters, and the other heroes rush to her aid. Barnaby and Kotetsu are the first to encounter what appears to be Jake. Kotetsu, believing Barnaby will attack blindly, intervenes to move "Jake" out of the way, but Barnaby reveals that he knew it was Origami Cyclone because he saw his...

Argument 2

... Hero TV communicator. The incident causes a rift between them, as Barnaby refuses to work with a colleague who doesn't trust him.
During the hero battles against Jake, Barnaby is randomly chosen right after Wild Tiger, as Jake believes the latter won't pose a challenge. Kotetsu gets a beating in his fight, and Barnaby fares no better. However, when all seems lost, Kotetsu appears on the scene and explains that Jake's second secret power is super hearing. He gives Barnaby a bomb that emits ultrasonic waves, which Barnaby only accepts after noticing blood on it, making him realize that Kotetsu is still seriously injured. It turns out to be a combination of an ultrasonic device and a flash bomb, and Barnaby manages to defeat Jake thanks to the surprise flash. Later, Kotetsu explains that he couldn't tell Barnaby about Jake's true second power—which allows him to hear other people's thoughts—because Jake would have figured out his plan. He tells Barnaby that he knew it would work because he trusted Barnaby to trust him.
• Mistaken memories
When Kriem awakens from her coma, Barnaby questions her about why Jake killed her parents. Unfortunately, Kriem reveals that Jake wasn't the real killer, but rather that they were just a small faction of Ouroboros. At first, Barnaby is reluctant to believe it, but after seeing evidence that Jake's right hand doesn't have the Ouroboros tattoo and that her alibi is true, he is shocked. Barnaby tries to remember, but the image of the killer in his mind shifts from Jake to other people he knows. This revelation leaves him confused, as he now has no clue as to who killed his parents. This causes Barnaby to suffer a nervous breakdown.
In an attempt to help Barnaby clear things up, Kotetsu suggests they review the events of the day his parents were murdered...

Argument 3

This, unfortunately, leads Barnaby to overhear a phone conversation between Kotetsu and Kaede, and he learns of Kotetsu's plans to resign in the worst possible way. Because Kotetsu doesn't honestly explain the circumstances of her decision, the apparent lack of trust further damages Barnaby's already fragile emotional state. Activating his Power Hundred, Barnaby flees and eventually turns to the only person he has left: Maverick. During their conversation, Barnaby receives a call from Samantha, who, upon discovering a photograph from the day of the murder, reveals that Barnaby had been with her all day. Barnaby confronts Maverick about the contradiction and soon discovers that Maverick had not only killed the Brooks, but was also a NEXT who had altered Barnaby's memories of the incident.
As a result of this revelation, Maverick again alters Barnaby's memories: first to reinstate Jake as the Brooks' killer, and then to erase any connection between Wild Tiger and Kotetsu. Later, after Samantha's death, in which Maverick frames Kotetsu, Barnaby sets out to hunt him down.

Even after the other heroes regain their memories, Barnaby still sees Kotetsu as a criminal trying to dishonor Wild Tiger's name by impersonating him. Kotetsu lures him away from the city's populated areas, where they fight on a bridge. Although Kotetsu tries to jog Barnaby's memory, nothing works, and Barnaby continues to attack him relentlessly. Finally, Barnaby regains his memory just as he's about to deliver the final blow when Kotetsu calls him "Bunny-chan." With his memories intact, Barnaby's anger is directed toward the source of recent events: Maverick. After Kotetsu receives a call from Maverick using Blue Rose's communicator, they both learn that the other heroes have been defeated and that they, along with Kaede, are being held captive in the Tower of Justice...

Argument 4

They head there to confront Maverick, but instead encounter the Fake Wild Tiger, who turns out to be an android developed by Rotwang called H-01. They are told that if they want to move forward and save both Kaede and the other heroes, they will have to defeat H-01, who was created to be even stronger than Cis.
In the ensuing battle, Barnaby and Kotetsu are thoroughly outmatched by H-01, who at one point wounds Barnaby by stabbing him in the leg. Kotetsu manages to immobilize the android by grabbing him from behind and yells at Barnaby to shoot them both with the laser pistol they had taken from H-01. After a moment's hesitation, Barnaby fires, believing that Kotetsu would either dodge at the last second or, thanks to his Power Hundred, emerge virtually unscathed. Although the explosion destroys H-01, it also severely injures Kotetsu, whose powers had been depleted just before the impact. Barnaby then learns of Kotetsu's power loss, which he had kept secret, and shortly afterward, Kotetsu appears to die in his arms as the other heroes and Kaede arrive on the scene.

Maverick reappears, and Barnaby, now intent on avenging his parents, Samantha and Kotetsu, is enraged. The heroes are forced to fight an entire squadron of H-01 androids and are only saved from death by Saito's hacking skills. The heroes pursue Maverick, who proclaims that he has so much influence in the city that people would believe him more than Barnaby, adding that the city wouldn't be what it is without him. These statements prove to be his undoing, as Agnes, from a helicopter, reveals that she had long since broken free from Maverick's memory manipulation and was now broadcasting the current scene live to all of Sternbild. Enraged, Maverick flees, and the heroes give chase, only for him to take Kaede hostage. Everyone is shocked when a shadow appears behind Maverick and strikes him...

Argument 5

...revealing that Kotetsu had simply fainted from the pain and blood loss. Barnaby is so relieved that he almost immediately embraces Kotetsu, much to the latter's surprise. When Barnaby demands that Maverick tell them about Ouroboros, Maverick erases his own memories and becomes a vegetable.
Later, back in the city, Saito shows Barnaby the code Brooks had installed to deactivate the androids. When Kotetsu announces his retirement from the hero life, Barnaby follows suit. He decides to find himself and do what he truly wants, instead of following in Maverick's footsteps.
• The return of Tiger and Rabbit
A year later, Hero TV is still booming, and the other heroes are busy catching criminals. Barnaby visits his parents' grave and realizes that the code Saito had given him was actually the sum of their birthdays, which added up to his own. He is deeply moved as he remembers how they had promised to always protect him.

In Sternbild, Wild Tiger, with only a minute of power remaining, corners a criminal who knows full well that Tiger's powers have reached their limit. When Tiger climbs onto the glass rooftop of a building, the glass shatters and sends him plummeting to his death... only to be caught by the sudden reappearance of his partner, also in his hero costume.
The couple argues for a while, but finally decide to return to the hero business.

Relations

• Wild Tiger/Kotetsu T. Kaburagi
Kotetsu is Barnaby's partner. At first, Barnaby disliked Kotetsu and saw him more as a burden than a companion. He called him "old man" until Kotetsu earned his trust, and now he calls him by his name. He has even accepted the nickname Kotetsu gave him: "Bunny" or "Bunny-chan." Their trust begins when they believe they have found the killer of Barnaby's parents. Barnaby becomes obsessed with killing him, but Kotetsu helps him understand that he needs to overcome his thirst for revenge and that he is a hero whose purpose is to help others, and that he has people by his side who will support him in his grief.

His personality and actions are the complete opposite of Kotetsu's, as Barnaby is far more logical. He is now able to finish Kotetsu's sentences before him. He comes to consider Kotetsu not only his partner in crime-fighting but also his friend. They share a strong emotional bond and would risk their lives to protect each other. This is especially evident at the end of the second film.

Barnaby would come to understand Kotetsu's kindness and his desire to help others, accepting and appreciating him. Kotetsu also cares deeply for Barnaby, worrying about his well-being after discovering that his memories of his parents' death might have been altered. Kotetsu finds it difficult to tell Barnaby that he is retiring due to his diminishing powers. Their alliance is further tested when Maverick murders Samantha and causes Barnaby not only to forget that Kotetsu is Wild Tiger, but also to frame him as the killer. Barnaby seeks revenge, but manages to remember who Kotetsu truly is, and together they defeat Maverick. Barnaby and Kotetsu remain partners even after Kotetsu begins to lose his powers; they both enjoy working together and believe they perform at their best as a team.

Relationships 2

• Emily Brooks (mother) and Barnaby Brooks (father)
Barnaby often thinks about his parents and talks about them, for they are his inspiration to become a hero. He admired them, and they treated him with love. He admired their work as scientists protecting the world, and by becoming a hero, he revealed his identity to the public to unmask those who murdered them. He loves them and misses them deeply.
• Samantha Taylor
His nanny since childhood and one of the few people Barnaby loves. She has treated him like a son and is very fond of him, making sure he eats well and visiting him frequently to check on him. Barnaby reciprocates this affection and considers her part of his family, often calling her "Aunt Samantha." She is one of the few people with whom he is openly vulnerable. He is devastated when she is murdered, and when Maverick makes him believe that Kotetsu killed her, he tries to kill Kotetsu (though he remembers Kotetsu's true identity at the last moment).
• Ivan Karelin
Barnaby entered the Hero Academy sometime after Ivan. While it's unknown how much Barnaby and Ivan interacted, the fact that Ivan had been at the academy much longer than Barnaby led the latter to refer to Ivan as his "Senpai" (only in Japanese), and this has continued throughout their careers as heroes.
• The other heroes
At first, he simply sees them as rivals and obstacles, and doesn't hesitate to outshine them. Despite this, they try to be kind to him. Over time, he comes to consider them companions and friends, although his relationship with them isn't as strong as the one he has with Kotetsu.
• Mattia Ingram
Mattia was Barnaby's neighbor, the one who lived across the street, when they were children. Mattia sees himself and Barnaby as friendly rivals.

Relationships 3

• Ryan Goldsmith
After taking over Apollon Media, Barnaby, in partnership with Mark Schneider, tries to get along with Ryan despite his frustration at having been misled into believing Kotetsu would also return to the First League. Barnaby and Ryan work well together on the field, but they don't have much in common, and Ryan's mannerisms often irritate Barnaby. Despite this, they have exchanged phone numbers to stay in touch (Ryan even claimed that Barnaby's number was the only one he had when he returned to Sternbild), and Ryan cares about Barnaby and his well-being, making an effort to meet with him privately to tell him what he believes to be the alliance between Blue Rose and Wild Tiger, and then abandon them both, as he doesn't want to leave Barnaby in the dark. Barnaby goes along with Ryan, as he doesn't want him to feel alone and without allies or friends.
• Albert Maverick
As the man who helped convince Barnaby to be a hero, he admires Maverick as a father figure and mentor, since he helped raise him after his parents' death. He often gave Barnaby advice in times of distress. He is heartbroken to discover that Maverick had manipulated his memories to erase the fact that he was the one who committed the murder. Although he appeared to care for Barnaby, he actually only saw him as a useful pawn, tricking him into believing that someone else had murdered his parents in order to convince him to be a hero. He tries to manipulate Barnaby once more by killing Samantha and making Barnaby forget that Kotetsu is Wild Tiger and that Kotetsu is the killer. Finally, Barnaby manages to corner Maverick, but he remains silent, and Barnaby decides to move on.

The name Barnaby is an English form of the Greek name Barnabas, which in turn is a variant of an Aramaic name. Its meaning is uncertain, but it is believed to mean either "son of the breath" or "son of the prophet."
His surname, Brooks, is English and designated a person who lived in the creek.

Trivia 2

He has a toy robot, a memento from his parents. It resembles the real android that appears in Barnaby's memory of his parents.
She likes aromatherapy, especially scented candles and incense. (She finds them very relaxing.)
He is extremely nearsighted. (The helmet on his suit corrects his vision problems when he wears it.)
She likes giving interviews, doing photo shoots, and talking about her parents.
In episode 6, he mentions that he likes opera, something he learned from his parents.
In episode 6, it is mentioned that he doesn't like fire.
Her birthday is October 31st, and she weighed 3329 g (7 lb, 5 oz) at birth. The password for H-01's security mode was derived from that, along with her parents' birthdays. (1104+728=10313329)
She prefers to create memories by spending time together, rather than receiving memories.
Nishida's favorite scene in Barnaby is his desperate struggle with Jake; no matter how many times he is knocked down or what is done to him, he will get back up as long as he has something to accomplish.
He wouldn't have chosen to be a hero if he'd grown up normally. Instead, he would have chosen to be a robotics engineer like his parents if Maverick hadn't killed them.
In some ways, the character of Barnaby is based on Marvel's Iron Man: both wear a mechanical suit while fighting crime, both are interested in robotics (like their parents), and both reveal their secret identity to the public.
Coincidentally, one of the voice actors for Iron Man in the Japanese version is the same one who voices Jake, the man who was the prime suspect in the murder of Bunny's parents.
His character also resembles Batman's, who witnessed his parents' murder and decided to become a superhero. However, unlike Batman, who became a hero to protect people, Barnaby did so to find his parents' killers. Interestingly, both are wealthy and have a guardian (Alfred in Batman's case and Samantha in Barnaby's).

Hero Gear

• HeroTV Communicator
Like all the heroes on Hero TV, Barnaby wears a simple communication bracelet that Agnes uses to contact him, usually to inform him of a crime. The other heroes can also use this bracelet to call him. Barnaby's bracelet is white with red stripes along the edges.

• Storage bracelet
In the second season, Saito developed the Hyper Nano System, which is now housed within Barnaby's hero suit—a black and silver nanotechnology device he wears on his left wrist. To activate the transformation, Barnaby simply slides the magenta sphere in the center of the bracelet.

Suits

• Prototype suit
This is the first hero costume Barnaby wears in the first episode, before his official introduction as a superhero. Predominantly gray and black, it has no sponsor logos, but rather white barcodes on the arms and chest (the same places where Barnaby's regular costume has the logos). The numbers and letters below the chest barcode are 199808J0 HS20030106 AP156984236. The two flaps on the back function as small thrusters, giving Barnaby some maneuverability in the air even without his powers activated. It is assumed to have most of the features of his main costume.
• Hero costume
Barnaby's standard hero suit is bulletproof and capable of withstanding gunfire. The visor includes a timer that alerts Barnaby when his powers are running low and compensates for any vision problems when he isn't wearing his goggles. The suit's systems appear capable of discerning information (a person's approximate height and age, the composition of machinery, etc.) simply by focusing their gaze on the object in question. It also seems to contain a considerable amount of data on other heroes, as evidenced by the information displayed on screen when Barnaby looks at Dragon Kid, Sky High, and Fire Emblem in the second episode. The suit is predominantly pink, white, and black, and has a design similar to the prototype. Sponsor logos are located on the arms ("Crusade System" Card Series and Amazon.co.jp) and on the chest (Bandai). It is equipped with a "Lighting Mode" that illuminates certain lines when Barnaby's Hundred Power is active. It has a propulsion system on the back, granting him additional mobility and flight-like abilities. Additionally, it has a feature called "Good Luck Mode" that expands and enlarges one leg of the suit, which is very useful for stronger kicks.

Suits 2

Although it was originally thought to increase the power of Barnaby's kicks, this function is actually purely decorative. On Barnaby's birthday, Saito "upgraded" his outfit, adding a rabbit symbol to the armor to match Kotetsu's tiger symbol.
In the second season, his suit is made of nanobots and now features a "mouth" on his helmet. According to the character designer, the "mouth" represents his emotions and his much kinder personality, a result of his evolution throughout the series. The new accessory is the "Hyper Luck Mode," a more aerodynamic version of his old Good Luck Mode leg.
• "Rabbit" costume
A costume that appears in several short comic strips in Animage magazine. It was made to match Wild Tiger's original costume, and therefore resembles a traditional superhero uniform. Like Barnaby's hero costume, its colors are predominantly pink, white, and black. It has no sponsor logos, but features "Jr" on the chest and hood. Barnaby is forced to wear this costume while his regular hero costume is undergoing maintenance and repairs, and it's a huge hit with fans and children, so Agnes subsequently makes him wear it even longer, much to Kotetsu's delight. In 2021, Tiger & Bunny director Keiichi Sato uploaded a clean piece of concept art to Twitter showing Barnaby in a "MAX Speed" version of the "Bunny" costume alongside Wild Tiger in a new "Wild Tiger 1 minute" version of his old costume.
•New hero costume
A darker hero suit, first used in episode 21. Like the prototype, it is predominantly black and gray, and has no sponsor logos. The suit's eyes glow red instead of the usual blue of hero suits, and are completely covered by a visor.
