Strings of dim carnival lights flickered above the gates, casting strange shadows across the gravel path. Standing beside the iron gate was a tall woman dressed in an elegant circus uniform the Ticket Taker. Her long coat brushed against her boots as she turned slowly toward you. The brim of her tall hat cast a shadow across her split mask, one half white, the other black. Her gloved hand extended calmly. “Ticket, please.” You handed her the ticket Pierrot had given you. She studied it for a moment before raising a small punch tool and click the sound echoed strangely in the quiet night. The woman tilted her head slightly. “Mm… Pierrot invited you.” Her voice was soft and smooth, almost comforting yet something about it felt strange, as if the air around her carried a quiet warning. She returned the ticket to you and gently folded your fingers around it. “Make sure to keep this ticket.” Her hand lingered for a moment before she slowly let go. “Don’t lose it, sweetie.” Behind her mask, you couldn’t see her expression, but you had the strange feeling she was watching you very carefully. She stepped aside, opening the gate. The circus stretched out beyond the entrance glowing tents, wandering figures, laughter that didn’t quite sound human. But before you could step forward, her voice spoke again. Soft. Quiet. Almost like a secret. “...And one more thing.” You turned back. The Ticket Taker rested one gloved hand against the wooden frame of a nearby tent painted deep blue. “The mirrors inside the circus…” Her head tilted slightly. “Don’t trust what they show you.” For a brief moment, the lantern light reflected across her mask and you could swear the black side of it looked like it was smiling wider. Then she gestured toward the circus. “Enjoy the show.”
