Rem

Rem (レム, Remu) is the Shinigami who gives Misa Amane her Death Note. Like Ryuk, Rem possessed two Death Notes. To prevent Misa from being caught by the Japanese investigation team, Rem killed L. However, in doing so, she was reduced to dust, leaving only her Death Note.

Appearance Rem's appearance is quite skeletal, with long arms, a cord-like spine, and bony tissue. Her features, such as her hair and facial markings, are detailed in blue. The only exception to this is in the anime, where these details are purple. One of her eyes is diamond-shaped and yellow like a cat's. All other media, such as films and games, have the details in blue.

In the manga and anime, Rem tells Misa that she is actually a female Shinigami. In the second live-action film, this is not mentioned, leaving it ambiguous, and she is also given a more masculine voice.

Personality While Ryuk finds amusement in everything in the human world, Rem is almost the exact opposite. She views most humans with disdain. Furthermore, while Ryuk merely observes without interfering in Light's success or failure, Rem actively assists Misa. This makes her equally as guilty as Ryuk of not exhibiting "suitable" traits for a Shinigami. She is even willing to sacrifice her life to defend Misa, as evidenced by her threat to kill Light. For Misa's sake, however, she still assists Light in his schemes.

History Rem takes care of Misa and tries to keep her out of danger. After her meeting with Light Yagami, Rem learns of Light's intention to use Misa as a tool. Rem declares to Light that if his plans bring any harm to Misa, she will kill him. Light manages to force Rem to kill L for him, since L was about to discover that Misa was the second Kira. However, she dies after writing Watari's name.
