Curiosities
Interesting facts Ryuk's Death Note is never used throughout the entire anime/manga, except for the ending where he kills Light.
The notebook that Ryuk gives to Light is the one that previously belonged to the Shinigami Sidoh. Sidoh wanted a second notebook, but the King of Death wouldn't grant it, so Ryuk stole it from Sidoh and threw it into the Human World.
According to Ryuk, he wrote the notebook's rules in English so that it would be easier for a human to understand, since English is the most widely spoken language among humans.
Ryuk breaks one of the notebook's rules in the first episode. The Shinigami arrives to see Light five days after he threw the notebook away, when the correct procedure is for the Shinigami to wait 38 days before retrieving the notebook from the human world.
Apparently, in the 2017 Netflix film, Ryuk is the one who makes the deaths happen. It seems he causes the deaths and manipulates things around him to make what Light wrote in the notebook happen; for example, in the scene where the Ferris wheel falls, Ryuk is shown forcing it to fall. That is, it's possible that in the film, the notebook doesn't have power, but Ryuk does, and the notebook serves as something to confirm the person's death and who he should kill, but nothing is confirmed.
History
History Ryuk always had a Death Note and never used it for anything (other than extending his lifespan), and his world was becoming increasingly boring, and most importantly, he was being teased a lot by his friends, so Ryuk steals a notebook from the Shinigami Sidoh and takes it for himself.
Out of boredom, Ryuk drops Sidoh's Death Note into the human world, having previously written all the rules in English to make its purpose easier for whoever finds it to understand. The notebook is found by the young student Light Yagami. From that point on, Ryuk follows Light's every move. He is impressed by Light having written so many names in the Death Note in just five days, saying that many would resent killing so many people in such a short time.
After Near proves Light guilty as the killer Kira, Light flees the scene and, in despair, is killed by Ryuk shortly after. With Kira's defeat, the Shinigami returns to the world from which he came.
Personality
Personality Ryuk doesn't talk much; he just laughs and comments on Light Yagami's actions regarding the notebook. He tells Light that apples are to Shinigami what cigarettes are to humans, and he's always wanting to eat them, so you almost always see Ryuk eating an apple. Because he was being watched, there was a time when Light stopped giving him apples; Ryuk's reaction was to writhe and turn his body upside down. He says this is an effect Shinigami experience when they stop eating apples, but it seems he was just faking it to convince Light to give him apples again.
Ryuk says he finds humans "interesting" and also shows interest in the unfolding events on several occasions, and is surprised by Kira's confident attitude, even stating that Light has become a remarkable Shinigami. Besides his main motivation, which is to escape boredom, he also reveals that the Shinigami world is rotten, just like the human world, and that Shinigami currently have no motivation and are practically useless. Thus, Ryuk shares the same motivations as Light before finding the Death Note – both were bored.
Ryuk claims to be neutral, not siding with either Kira or L, stating that he could kill them both if he wanted to. He is surprised to realize that Kira isn't afraid of him and also offended by Kira's accusation the first time he saw him that Ryuk was there to "claim his soul."
In other media, Ryuk remains the same, but in the drama, he talks too much (especially when telling Light how long Misa's lifespan is), and it seems that Ryuk is more on Light's side, always encouraging him to use the notebook.
In the 2017 film, Ryuk is a manipulative God of Death; he tries to make Light use the notebook simply for his own amusement. Ryuk seeks only that, amusement, and tries to make the people around him entertain him.
Appearance
Appearance Ryuk has a rather humanoid appearance. He possesses large, round, yellow eyes with red irises, his skin is a light gray, almost blue, and his limbs are unusually long. Ryuk has feather-like wings that sprout from his back, allowing him to fly.
