Light is one of the characters in Death Note who has been given a Nendoroid figure. Light's Nendoroid comes with a small Death Note and a pen that he holds, as well as three facial expressions: one smiling, one angry, and one normal. In anime, certain characters take on stylized hair colors while the viewer listens to their thoughts; Light's hair color is red. In Death Note Relight 1: Visions of a God, an unnamed Shinigami appears in the Shinigami Realm. This new Shinigami asks the others where the renegade Shinigami named Ryuk is. Some believe that this nameless Shinigami was created with the intention that viewers would connect him with Light as a sort of reincarnation, though this is not canonically possible due to Mu

Light's existence being depicted in a position similar to that of a crucifixion on the manga's twelfth and final cover. This position is reproduced by Light during the anime's second closing sequence and again when he is portrayed as a secret Nendoroid figure from the Death Note Case File product line.

The anime further emphasized the rivalry between Light and L, to the point that Light continued to obsess over L even after the latter's death. According to Light's voice actor, Mamoru Miyano, although Light never saw L as a friend, L was the only rival who could truly "fill his boredom". Furthermore, although Light initially celebrated L's death, he ended up feeling as if "his soul had been taken from him", leading Kappei Yamaguchi, L's voice actor, to believe that Light was primarily motivated to start using the Death Note out of boredom, rather than wanting to change the world.

Several creative decisions were made in the process of adapting Light into the anime. For example, the color red has often been assigned during scenes where Light demonstrates murderous intent, especially during scenes where he is contemplating plans to kill his opponents. [8] There are several scenes in which Light's eyes demonstrate lifelessness, primarily representing his boredom,[9] although Miyano suggests that the lifeless eyes may also represent underlying feelings of emptiness. [ 7 ]

Ohba said Light was "a young man who could understand the pain of others" when he first encountered the Death Note. Ohba stated that if Ryuk had never been interested in the human world, Light would have become "one of the greatest police leaders in the world" who, along with L, would fight crime. Ohba described Light's life as "ruined" after obtaining the Death Note, and that Light became a victim of the Death Note "in many ways". Ohba described Light as someone with good intentions and a "very vain" nature, reflected in his "twisted desire to be divine," even though he loved his family and intended to make the world "a better place." Ohba added that he believed debating whether Light's actions were good or bad was "not very important", although he personally saw him as a "very bad" character.

According to Ohba, Light sees Misa Amane, whom he uses as an accomplice, as a "bad person" who killed innocents, so he acts with emotional coldness and manipulates her. Despite this, he keeps her alive even after her memories of being Kira have been erased for the second (and last) time.

Light's surname, "Yagami," includes the kanji for "night" and "god," while his given name is spelled with the Japanese character for "moon." Ohba said his editor suggested the surname "Yagami" and that he did not feel "too worried" about the meaning of the name. However, during the manga's final scene, in which a group of Kira's worshippers appear under a moonlit night sky, Ohba stated that he "liked" how the final scene ended up creating a "deeper meaning" for the name.

When asked which character was more like him, Ohba indicated Near and "maybe Light". About Light, Ohba cited "because I did well in school". Obata said that Light was his second favorite human character and that he wasn't sure if it was because he "liked" Light or because he drew "such an evil character" in a children's magazine.

Light is physically and mentally disabled. He yells at Mikami to write down the names of everyone present, but Mikami responds by asking how he intends to kill them with a fake notebook. This leads Mikami to realize that Light is not "God". Light becomes increasingly distraught and begins to ask Misa for help, only to be told that she is not there. He then asks for Takada and is told that she is dead. In complete desperation, Light begs Ryuk to help him by killing everyone in the room, but Ryuk reminds him that he is not on anyone's side. Ryuk fulfills his initial promise: he writes "Light Yagami" on his Death Note, and Light pleads in vain for Ryuk to reverse the process. He begins to panic, repeating in his mind "I don't want to die", before the Death Note finally takes effect, killing him.

After being unmasked as Kira, Light tries to deny it, but with his declaration of victory and the evidence presented by Near, everyone is convinced that Light is Kira. Light laughs maniacally and tries to explain the benefits of Kira's world, as well as trying to convince them that his intentions were altruistic and therefore justified. However, Near responds by saying that everyone has the right to choose what they consider right or wrong, while Kira is simply an evil "mass murderer", killing people to impose his personal utopia on others selfishly. When Light observes the room to see what others think, he is met with cold stares that confirm the rejection of his new world.

Light then decides to distract everyone in the room, raising the possibility that the notebook brought by the task force is fake. In the middle of the speech, he tries to use the piece of paper he found on his watch to kill Near. Matsuda reacts by shooting Light, interrupting him and scolding him for taking his own father to death because of his vision. Light then tries to finish writing the name using the blood from the gunshot wound. Matsuda, enraged, shoots Light several times, seriously wounding him. The task force disarms Matsuda before he kills Light in a fit of rage and also collects the piece of paper to prevent it from being used again.

After moving to Japan, Near calls Light to confirm his presence, pretending to cooperate with the investigation and subtly declaring his intention to challenge him. After Gevanni obtains the fake notebook, Near calls the Task Force and informs them of a meeting he wants to set up with SPK attending, which will take place at the Yellow Box Warehouse. Light eagerly awaits this encounter and basks in the idea that it will be the day when he can finally eliminate all his enemies and start building his new world. However, a few days before the scheduled meeting, Takada is kidnapped by Mello. Takada manages to kill Mello, while Light kills Takada using fire to erase any trace.

The meeting between Task Force Kira and the SPK begins two days later, and Mikami arrives during the meeting to write the names of everyone present in the notebook except Kira's. Having prepared a fake notebook all along, Light hoped to win, as he had planned everything for Mikami to bring the real one. However, the real notebook is revealed to be fake. Near reveals that Mikami had actually written down Takada's name after her kidnapping, unaware that Light had done the same. This allowed Near to get hold of the real notebook that Mikami had used to write down her name.

Light takes advantage of this to use Takada to talk to Mikami. He does this while satisfying the Task Force, under the guise of investigating it. As a result, the Task Force transfers its investigation back to Japan, with the SPK eventually doing the same. During a meeting between Light and Takada, Mikami calls them, and Light manages to confirm to Mikami that he is Kira, and Mikami confirms to Light that she is Kira's new representative through subtle communication. Light then says that all of the Task Force's surveillance cameras and most wiretaps must be removed, as per Kira's request. Light then privately reveals to Takada that he is Kira.

During the remainder of their meetings with Takada, Light and she communicated via notes, while the Task Force installed a wiretap on Light. Light instructs Takada to tell Mikami to forge a notebook and use it to jot down names in public, while he sends the real names to Takada so she can commit the murders. Light's encouragement is that for his final showdown with Near, he expects Near to trade his notebook for a fake one, which is why he's already preparing a replica. Light also makes Mikami say things in public, suggesting that Ryuk is not following him. That way, when Near touches the Death Note, he won't think there's no Shinigami because the notebook is fake. Light's plan works perfectly, with Near's agent, Stephen Gevanni, swapping the pages of Mikami's fake notebook.

Light chooses Demegawa as Kira's spokesperson, intending to spread Kira's message to gain more power and overthrow Near and Mello. Thanks, in part, to the death of David Hoope and the battle against the Mafia, the United States submits to Kira and disbands the SPK, an organization commanded by Near. Near, deducing that the second L is Kira, calls Light and claims to have interrogated Mello and discovered the existence of false rules. Near refutes the 13-day rule and provides evidence to the Task Force by pointing to Kira as the second L, sowing doubt in the Task Force to turn against him.

Mello contacts Mogi and tells him to follow him to New York, which Mogi does under the supervision of Light and the Task Force. However, Mello sends Mogi to SPK headquarters, which puts Light under extreme pressure, as Mello and Near constantly pressure Mogi to reveal information. On the one hand, if Light lets Mogi live, he may reveal information that is harmful to Light, but if Light kills him, it will only incriminate him.

Luckily for Light, Mogi does not reveal any information. However, as he cannot guarantee this, and in order to eliminate Near and Mogi, Light sends Demegawa and several other followers of Kira to attack Near. However, Near uses L's heritage to distract the crowd and escape.

Near lies to the Task Force, claiming that Mogi died of a heart attack. This raises suspicions against Light, which leads Aizawa to provide Near with a lot of information, making him believe that Light Yagami is the second L and Kira, while Mogi returns to the Task Force. Light now expects stricter surveillance, as Near has turned the Task Force against him, so he has Misa hand over possession of his notebook to Teru Mikami, who kills Demegawa for causing a ruckus, attesting to its value. Mikami then chooses Kiyomi Takada as Kira's new spokesperson, who coincidentally had a relationship with Light in the past.

Light informs Near of the current situation, and Near monitors the transaction location using satellites. The exchange is successfully completed and the kidnappers keep the notebook.

Near decides to pursue the kidnappers alone, but his plan fails when Mello uses the Death Note to eliminate more than half of his team. Light takes advantage of the situation to exchange everything he knows about the notebook for information about the perpetrator of the kidnappings. Near tells Light that someone using the alias Mello, infiltrated into the mafia, is behind the kidnappings, and Light orders the Task Force to investigate House Wammy, revealing to Light Mello's motives.

The president calls Light, and Light discovers that Mello was blackmailing him. Then, Light takes advantage of this to get the president to organize an operation led by Yitzak Ghazanin. Light discovers the location of Mello and the mob by taking control of the current owner of the Death Note and having him email the location. However, the operation fails thanks to the intervention of Sidoh, a Shinigami who works for the mafia.

Light then asks Misa to send a message to the Task Force as if she were Kira, informing them that Kira has ceded possession of her Death Note to one of the Task Force members to attack the Mafia and retrieve the notebook. Light hoped that Matsuda would take possession and make the Shinigami Eye deal, but unfortunately for Light, Soichiro does so in his place. The operation begins and they retrieve the Death Note, and Light instructs them to confront Mello. Soichiro threatens him instead of killing him, giving Jose the opportunity to severely shoot Soichiro.

Mello then blows up the base and escapes, but Soichiro manages to reveal Mello's real name to Light. Soichiro dies in the hospital, after seeing that Light's life expectancy had not disappeared, proving to him that Light was not Kira.

Part II Mello's kidnappings After five years of everything going smoothly, Takimaura, the head of the NPA, is kidnapped in exchange for the Death Note. At the same time, an FBI agent, John McEnroe, confronts Soichiro and demands the Death Note. This FBI agent also seeks the cooperation of the Task Force to rescue Takimura from the kidnappers.

Light feels obligated to get rid of the kidnappers and the American organization as soon as possible, as they are the only people, besides the Task Force, who know of the existence of the Death Note. Light kills Takimura so that they no longer have a bargaining chip for the Death Note, and so that it doesn't look suspicious, since it would be easy to assume that the kidnappers killed him. However, the kidnappers announce that they have kidnapped Sayu Yagami, which puts Light under pressure. For help, he contacts the organization that John McEnroe offered to mediate, and Light talks to Near for the first time, who introduces himself as N and is aware of the previous L's death.

The end of L Light instructs Misa to find his buried Death Note, which results in the recovery of his memories. Light instructs Misa to kill L if she remembers his real name from when they were on campus, but Misa does not remember and thus makes the Shinigami Eye pact again, which was what Light wanted in case Misa forgot L's name, as accepting the pact and having her life expectancy cut in half would put pressure on Rem. Light then instructs Misa to start killing criminals again so that L suspects Misa is behind the murders. This serves to put Rem in a situation where she is forced to kill L in order to save Misa. Rem in fact kills L and Watari, which results in his death, just as Light planned.

After winning the battle against L and assuming his persona, Light gains control of Kira's investigation team. This puts him in a safer position, as his role as a second-generation L covers up his identity as Kira.

Over the next five years, using L's criminal record database, Light's trials became harsher than ever. As a result, the world plunges into a dark age in which virtually everyone lives under Kira's law. At the same time, support for Kira grows exponentially, and even entire nations proclaim their support for him. By the time the second arc begins, Kira has already garnered the support of most of the world.

Yotsuba Light accepts L's offer to join the investigation team and hunt down Higuchi, who has taken up the mantle of Kira. During Yotsuba's investigation, Light works under the alias "Light Asahi".

L handcuffs himself and Light together, displeasing Misa and Light. L suggests manipulating Misa to get information from her, but Light refuses, as he would never dare to take advantage of anyone's feelings. While Misa rests in his hotel room, L displays apathy when talking about the difficulty of capturing Kira, which leads Light to fight him.

Months later, while L is in a bad mood and not working on the case, Light finds a correlation between the murders and the growth of Yotsuba, leading the investigation to believe that Kira is infiltrating Yotsuba or working behind the scenes, and also leads them to the conclusion that Kira can kill by means other than heart attacks. Observing the meetings of the Yotsuba leaders, Light opposes the permission given by L for the killings to continue and impersonates L to call Reiji Namikawa, who agrees to help L and postpone the killings.

Misa ends up finding evidence that points to Kyosuke Higuchi as Kira. As L and the investigation team execute the plan to take down Higuchi, Light observes the situation and follows L, going so far as to be in a helicopter with him and witness Higuchi's arrest.

As the Task Force discovers the Death Note, Light touches it, regaining his memories as Kira. To claim ownership of the Death Note that is in his hands, Light kills Higuchi using a fragment of the notebook that was on his watch.

L and the Task Force then discover the 13-day rule, exonerating Light and Misa c

Light, now cornered by L, puts his master plan into action. Rem had already handed Misa's notebook to Light, erasing her memories and preventing her from confessing.

Light then exchanges the notebooks with their respective Shinigami, with Ryuk being attached to the notebook originally belonging to Misa and Rem to Light's. Light puts two false rules on the notebook to which Rem is attached: one that says that when the notebook is destroyed, anyone who has touched it will die, and more importantly, anyone who does not write names in the notebook for 13 consecutive days will also die.

Light instructs Rem to allow Kyosuke Higuchi to become the new owner of the Death Note to which she is attached, and then asks L to stop him. During his confinement, no criminals die, which reinforces the hypothesis that Light is Kira. In seven days of confinement, Light relinquishes possession of his notebook, and consequently all of his memories as Kira are erased and altered. During his fifteenth day of confinement, criminals begin to die again, and on his fiftieth day, the Task Force orders L to release Light and Misa.

Soichiro then simulates an execution by shooting Light and Misa with a blank gun, which convinces L to release them from captivity, as Misa would have killed Soichiro in this situation.

After discovering her address, Second Kira arrives at Light's house, and Light invites Misa to her room and asks her to explain her actions. Misa says that she wanted to meet Kira because her parents were murdered in front of her, and Kira killed the killer. Misa asks to be his girlfriend, admitting that she wouldn't mind if he just used her. Light agrees, intending to kill her when she is no longer useful to him. However, Misa's Shinigami, Rem, vows to kill him if he ever hurts Misa. Light considers Rem a major threat, as having little control over Misa could lead her to do something reckless, not to mention that Misa's capture could result in Rem killing Light.

Light now needs to keep a group of girlfriends so that his new relationship with Misa does not attract attention, since L had already deduced that Kira and the second Kira have allied themselves.

Misa directly disobeys Light's orders, and instead of meeting two weeks after their first meeting, as Light had requested, she meets with him just two days later. Light takes the opportunity to convince Rem to help him kill L, promising that it is for Misa's happiness. Rem agrees and Light says that she should only obey his orders when he tells them to.

On campus, Light meets L again to everyone's surprise, and L steals Misa's cell phone after taking advantage of the crowd. Misa is then taken away, and L reveals that he has found DNA evidence in her room, indicating that Misa is the second Kira. This is dangerous for Light, as the fact that Misa is the second Kira would point to him as the original Kira.

A few days later, L asks Light to join the Task Force. Light arrives at the hotel and seems surprised by the small size of the Task Force. L tells him that there are some outsiders who know what happens in the investigation and that only one of them can contact him directly. Light thinks to himself that if everyone in the Task Force dies except one, the killer will be revealed, so he needs to find out who this outsider is with the information. Light is instructed to examine the investigation documents and then watch the recording without taking notes or removing anything. After watching the recordings, Light says that there may be someone else with Kira's abilities, citing the difference in the dead criminals, as well as the fact that some were killed immediately after revealing their faces.

Light realizes that L would have told him his plan regardless of what he told, and that L set everything up so that if Light didn't mention the existence of another Kira, he would look suspicious; and if it did, it would reinforce the theory of L before the Task Force. L asks Light to help in the case by pretending to be Kira and says that only he is capable of playing this role, starting by writing a draft of the speech as if he were Kira. Later, the recording is created and sent to various TV stations. The Second Kira responds with videos that contain indirect commentary, and some quite direct, about Death Notes, Shinigami, and how they might meet. Light goes to Aoyama to find the Second Kira, but fails. However, because he has Shinigami Eyes, the Second Kira is able to identify Light as Kira, as he cannot see the length of his life.

Continued: Soichiro faints due to stress, and Light and L visit him in the hospital. There, through Soichiro, Light is able to confirm that the L that appeared before him is, in fact, the real L...

The Second Kira On April 22, 2004 (2007 in the anime), during a broadcast on Sakura TV, "Kira" sends tapes stating that if the reports of crimes cease, Kira will kill police officers and reporters, and demands that the life of someone responsible for Kira's investigation be handed over to him — the Director or L. "Kira" tells them to pick one and reveal the name in four days and that, as Kira knows the Headmaster's face, there are no special requirements; however, if they choose L, he must appear on Sakura TV and give a ten-minute speech. "Kira" says that they will decide if the person on the news is L, and if it is decided that he is not, Kira will take the lives of several police officers as compensation.

Light watches the broadcast, amused by the fact that someone else also possesses a Death Note, presumably with the Shinigami Eyes. Light concludes that this person is dangerous as it could tarnish Kira's reputation and her capture would be detrimental to him. Therefore, Light decides to join the Task Force to keep an eye on L as well as this fake Kira.

"Hideki Ryuga" then reveals himself to Light as L. Light is shocked and tries to keep calm around this supposed new friend. Upon arriving home, Light throws a tantrum and explains L's strategy: if Light writes L's name using the pseudonym, even if it is the real one, the real Hideki Ryuga will die (since Light will have unconsciously imagined Ryuga's face), and suspicion will fall on him. Also, even if Light discovers L's real name, that L may very well be an impostor, and suspicions of the hypothetical real L will fall on Light again, as the timing will still be very convenient. Light accepts L's challenge, excited about the impending battle of wits.

L invites Light to play tennis, and they accept, demonstrating a fairly balanced skill level. During the match, both ponder on strategies. Light comes to the conclusion that L has invited him to play tennis in order to prepare the ground for future meetings, which will essentially be trials; Light also plans to confirm that Ryuga is L, with the Task Force confirming.

After Light wins the intense tennis match, L reveals that she suspects Light is Kira, but Light continues to feign surprise. Light comes to the conclusion that, with this performance, L is trying to prevent him from meeting with the Task Force. Afterwards, they spend time together in a café.

At the café, L tests Light several times, and Light manages to escape L's psychological traps. L asks Light to help Kira's investigation; if Light is Kira, L will be closer to him and there will be more room for Light to make mistakes, and if he is not Kira, his great intellectual capacity will be useful for the investigation. Light takes advantage of this by demanding to meet with the members of the Task Force to confirm L's identity and thus begin assisting in the investigation. To Light's surprise, L accepts.

Meeting L Light is conducting his entrance exams when he notices a student sitting strangely at his desk.

He passes his exams, getting top marks, and manages to enter To-Oh University. Together with another student who also got full marks, the same one who was sitting strangely earlier, he makes a speech. Noticing the peculiar behavior of this student, who named himself in honor of the famous pop idol Hideki Ryuga, Light is annoyed by the student's constant chatter, which always concerns his personality.

Surveillance cameras When Light arrives home, he notices that the handle of his bedroom door (which is usually a few millimeters lower) is strangely at the top, and the tip of the pencil that used to be on the hinge of the door is broken. To make matters worse, his bluff, a piece of paper, was mysteriously put back on the door. This leads Light to believe that L installed surveillance cameras and wiretaps in his room. Light then bribes Ryuk with apples, asking him to find the location of the cameras.

Light reveals that he has hidden scandalous magazines and begins flipping through them to give L the impression that he is a normal teenager and that the magazines were what he had been hiding all along. During dinner, L asks for a message to appear on TV, stating that the ICPO has sent 1500 investigators to Japan to investigate Kira, but Light realizes the hoax.

As Light prepares to study for his entrance exams, he puts a piece of his notebook and a mini LCD TV inside a bag of chips (containing a flavor that only he, the whole family, prefers). While studying, whenever Light gets his hand on the package, he checks the names of the criminals using the mini TV and writes them down. The main idea is that L sees that criminals have died, something that Light would not be able to notice, busy studying in his room. With this trick, Light manages to kill two insignificant criminals.

In the following days, Light continues to kill criminals, small or large, to cover up the fact that petty criminals died while he was studying.

Eventually, the surveillance cameras are removed and Light plans to find L through his father.

After Raye's sudden death, Naomi Misora decides to participate in the Kira case on her own. Having been told by Raye that he showed his FBI badge to someone during a bus hijacking, Naomi deduces that Kira must have been on the bus. In her attempts to contact the Japanese Task Force, she encounters Light Yagami. Light uses his father's position to his advantage by telling Naomi that he is the son of Chief Yagami, which allows him to slowly gain her trust. Cautious at first, she uses the false name of Shoko Maki to protect herself until she can contact L.

After realizing that this was a pseudonym, due to the way Ryuk laughed, Light finally gets Naomi to reveal his name, saying that he is a member of the Task Force and that he is actually working with L. Taking advantage of Naomi's emotional state, Light offers the possibility for her to join the Task Force and help capture her fiancé's killer. Light says she'll need to see ID before she can join the team, and Naomi shows her driver's license. Using a piece of the Death Note, Light writes Naomi's name, resulting in her suicide. His body is never found due to the specifications made by Light in the Death Note.

Light asks Penber if he is carrying a laptop and if he has a file with the names of all the FBI agents in Japan. Penber replies that he doesn't have such a file, and Light hands him an envelope. He instructs Penber to hold the envelope, grab the transmitter, and put on the headphones. By the transmitter, Light guides Penber through a turnstile at the west entrance at 3:11 p.m. Penber gets on a Yamanote Line train at 3:13 p.m. and sits down. Light asks how many FBI agents there are, and Penber replies that he believes there are four groups, totaling twelve agents. Light instructs Penber to call an agent of lower rank than his own and ask for the names and photos of all agents sent to Japan. Penber uses his cell phone to call an agent and then asks for the agents' names and photos. Penber receives the FBI file at 3:21 p.m., being the second FBI agent to receive it. Light tells Penber to remove the contents of the folder he handed him, and Penber pulls out four envelopes with ten rectangular spaces cut out on the left side of each. Light says to write the names of the agents in the folder spaces. At 4:42 p.m., when Raye gets off the train, he dies of a heart attack when he turns around and sees Light.

Light takes the files home and removes the Death Note pages from the envelopes, revealing the times and causes of each agent's deaths. Each agent will receive the file and die at a different time.

Light gets on a bus with his escort, Yuri, and Light's follower sits behind the couple.

Before the scheduled date, Light had written Kiichiro Osoerda's name, instructing him to hijack the bus, get out of the vehicle, and die in an accident after seeing a ghost. Osoerda boards the bus. The man pulls out a gun and points it at the driver, taking the bus hostage. Light tricks his follower into saying something, handing Yuri a note containing his plans to capture the bus hijacker. Light asks Raye to show him proof that he is not an accomplice of the kidnapper, forcing him to show his identity as an FBI agent, along with his name, Raye Penber. Light drops a note, which the kidnapper picks up, only to discover that it was an excerpt from the Death Note, allowing him to see Ryuk. In shock, the kidnapper unloads his gun and gets off the bus, dying in an accident.

Back at Light's house, Ryuk asks if he will write down Penber's name in the Death Note. Light replies that it would be very suspicious if he did this right after they met. In addition, he wants Penber to show him the names and faces of all the FBI agents sent to investigate the NPA. On December 27, 2003, Light goes to an underground section of Shinjuku Station. He discovers that he can write the date and cause of death on the Death Note without a name, and that the notebook will work when the name is added later. Using a hood to conceal his identity, Light appears behind Penber (who does not know it is him) and reveals himself to be Kira. Light threatens Penber, stating that refusal to obey his orders will lead to his death, the death of his love, and the death of his family.

FBI agents Shortly thereafter, already working with the Japanese police, L begins to lead a task force alongside Light's own father, Soichiro, with the goal of exposing and capturing Kira.

Light hacks into his father's computer without a trace and discovers that L and the Task Force speculate that Kira may be a student. Light concludes that, considering that it would be possible to control the conditions of death using the Death Note, manipulating the time of death is also possible. Light then proceeds to kill criminals at hour-long intervals to contradict the theory that "Kira is a student", revealing to L that Kira has access to police information. Light's main goal is to sow distrust between the police and L, as L will now be required to investigate the police.

Upon returning home from school, Light is warned by Ryuk that someone is following him. To avoid being investigated, Light is determined to kill his pursuer.

Ryuk explains to Light the purpose of the Death Note. A Shinigami gains extra time by killing humans with a Death Note, which is why a Shinigami can live for many years and cannot be killed in any other way. Then, Ryuk explains to Light that Shinigami possess eyes that allow them to see the real name and remaining life span of any human over their head. In addition, a Shinigami can make a pact with the owner of the Death Note to receive the " Shinigami Eyes " in exchange for half of that human's remaining lifespan, and Ryuk offers to make the deal. Light refuses the proposal, stating that he needs to live long to rule his utopian world.

Suddenly, Light has an idea of how to find out the FBI agent's name. He decides to use his trusted criminals to find out how specific the details of the death need to be.

Tailor taunts Kira by calling him "evil" and, in a fit of rage, Kira kills him with a heart attack.

Light thinks the nightmare is over, but Tailor's broadcast is suddenly interrupted and the letter "L" for L appears. Using a voice synthesizer, the real L announces that Lind L. Tailor was an imposter and a criminal on death row. He explains that Tailor's information was never released to the public, so there was no way Kira could have killed him until then. L taunts Kira, daring him to try to kill him, while Light stares at the TV, furious and shocked that he has been tricked. After a few seconds, L discovers that Kira needs the person's real name and face to kill her; otherwise, he would have killed her. L announces that the video was shown only in the Kanto region of Japan as a strategy to locate Kira. L says that he is now talking directly to Kira and warns him that he will catch him. The broadcast ends immediately. As Light ponders this, he accepts L's challenge. The two announce their intentions and declare it to be "justice", with Light needing to avoid suspicion and being captured by L, while also needing to kill him.

In the year 2003 (2006 in the anime), Light Yagami finds a mysterious notebook on the floor of her school. On the cover, it says "Death Note". The Death Note instructions say that if a person's name is written on it, that person will die. Initially, Light doubts the authenticity of the notebook, but after experimenting with it, he realizes that the Death Note is real.

After much thought about whether or not he should continue using the notebook, he concluded that no one else would be able to bear the burden of improving the world. Light then encounters the Death Note's former owner, a Shinigami named Ryuk. He explains his reasons for letting the Death Note fall into the Human World and that when the time comes for Light to die, he will be the one to write Light's name in his notebook. Light then tells him about his goal to get rid of all the evil people in the world and rule it as a God. Light's murders reach a monumental scale, attracting the attention of the master detective known as L. The first conflict between Light and L takes place on television, beginning with the broadcast of Lind L. Tailor. L puts Tailor as bait on television to deceive Light, with the network announcing that the broadcast is worldwide.

History Light grew up in Japan with her family, which consists of her father, Soichiro Yagami, a member of the Japanese Task Force (an investigative team that opposes Kira), her mother, Sachiko Yagami, and her younger sister, Sayu Yagami.

At the beginning of the series, Light is a third-year high school student (12th grade) at Daikoku Private Academy and also attends supplemental classes at Gamou Preparatory Academy at the beginning of the story. He later enters To-Oh University (東応大学, Tōō Daigaku).

Light's degree of arrogance and cruelty varies depending on the adaptation. In the manga, Japanese films, musicals, and anime (at least before the final episode), Light is firm in his decisions like Kira and rarely expresses any doubt or regret about his utilitarian actions or beliefs. An example of this is shown early in the series, when he decides, quickly and unequivocally, to kill FBI agent Raye Penber for following him, despite Raye not being a criminal. However, in the final episode of the anime, Light, defeated by Near and in critical condition while trying to evade capture, looks sad as he reflects on his high school self, seemingly at the moment he grabbed the notebook. Their true emotions regarding this memory, however, remain ambiguous. [ 5 ]

Light's arrogance and cruelty are especially toned down in the series and the Netflix film adaptation. In these versions, he seems less confident, shows hesitation to kill the FBI agents investigating him, and even considers abandoning his mission when he feels cornered. Even so, in all adaptations, Light has consistently been portrayed as an idealist willing to resort to extreme measures to defend his idea of justice.

Through the use of the Death Note, Light quickly begins to develop a cold and ruthless nature. As a utilitarian, he will use any means necessary to achieve his goals and ambitions. However, although his actions put his family in danger, he continues to demonstrate love and genuine concern for them. This is evident when his sister Sayu is kidnapped and held hostage. Light prevents Soichiro from taking drastic measures to keep Sayu safe, even knowing that this would increase Mello's chances of obtaining the Death Note.

Furthermore, the series shows that Light was not born without remorse. After handing over the notebook and temporarily losing his memories to avoid suspicion, Light demonstrates compassion, reluctance to manipulate others, and an intense aversion to killing. As soon as his memories return, however, he reverts to being the ruthless Kira and remains so until his death.

Light is characterized as hardworking, talented, and a natural genius. Highly perceptive and with great problem-solving skills, Light is a skilled planner and good at creating scenarios. Furthermore, Light is very popular among his peers and adored by his family. However, his high intelligence, academic achievements, and constant praise from adults laid the groundwork for an innate arrogance and presumption that intensified rapidly after he assumed the role of Kira. Light also struggled with a feeling of boredom that was alleviated as soon as he began using the notebook.

Like his father, Soichiro, Light possesses a strong sense of justice, but this is quickly distorted after being corrupted by the power of the Death Note. Believing the world is "rotten," he uses the notebook as a means to impose his will and rid the world of evil people. As Kira, Light's main goal is to create a new world free of injustice, populated only by people he considers honest and kind, and to rule this new world as his "God." Despite knowing the criminality of murder, Light considers his actions the ultimate "sacrifice" to make the world a better place.

Appearance Light is a young man of above-average height, with light brown hair and brown eyes. During Part I, when not wearing his school uniform, which consists of a beige suit and red tie, he dresses quite casually, sometimes wearing a dress shirt under a blazer or a V-neck sweater with a turtleneck underneath. During Part II, when not wearing a similar style of clothing, he is seen wearing a suit.

He is considered quite handsome, a trait noted by Misa Amane and Kiyomi Takada, among others.

Light Yagami (夜神月, Yagami Raito) is the main protagonist of the Death Note series. After discovering the Death Note, he decides to use it to rid the world of criminals. His murders end up being labeled by the inhabitants of Japan as the work of "Kira".
