One day, Light found a black notebook in the school courtyard labeled "Death Note." It stated that if you wrote down your name while imagining your face, you would die. At first, Light didn't believe in its power, but after several experiments, he became convinced that the notebook truly did kill.
He decided to use the Death Note to eliminate criminals and create a world without crime. Gradually, his goal became more personal: Light wanted to become the god of a new world, where he would decide who was worthy of life. Because of the large number of criminal deaths, society nicknamed the unknown killer "Kira." The world's greatest detective, L, was called in to investigate. He set up a televised sting, which revealed that Kira was in Japan and capable of killing people remotely, knowing their names and faces.
Light perceived L as a threat and decided to discover his true identity. When FBI agents arrived in Japan, Light discovered he was being followed by Raye Penber. He learned the agent's real name and killed him, then eliminated the other agents stationed in Japan.
After Raye's death, his fiancée, Naomi Misora, began investigating the circumstances of his death independently. Light met her and, realizing she suspected a connection between Kira and the incident, tricked her into revealing her real name and killed her with the Death Note.
Light entered To-O University, finishing top of his class. It was there that he first met the man who introduced himself as Hideki Ryuga—in reality, it was L. Light immediately get who he was dealing with.

Despite recognizing his greatest enemy, Light remained calm and accepted L's invitation to work together on the Kira investigation.
L openly told Light that he suspected him of being Kira. Their relationship became a constant battle of intelligence, with both pretending to cooperate while secretly trying to expose the other. Light carefully maintained his innocent image while searching for L's real name.
Around this time, a second Kira appeared. The second Kira was Misa Amane, a model who possessed another Death Note and the Shinigami Eyes, allowing her to see people's real names. Misa quickly became obsessed with Light and eventually revealed herself to him. She offered to help him and accepted him as her boyfriend, while Light mainly saw her as a useful tool.
L eventually discovered that Misa was connected to the second Kira and had her detained. To protect Misa and himself, Light created a complicated plan involving the Death Notes. He temporarily gave up ownership of his notebook, causing him to lose all memories of being Kira. During this period, Light genuinely helped L investigate the Kira case and appeared completely innocent.
After the Death Note was recovered and Light touched it again, his memories returned instantly. He resumed his role as Kira and secretly continued his plan against L. Light manipulated the situation so that Rem, Misa's Shinigami, would be forced to kill L in order to protect Misa.
Meanwhile, L remained suspicious of Light until the very end. Even after years of investigation, he never obtained enough evidence to prove that Light was Kira. Light continued to act as L's trusted partner while secretly preparing for his final victory.
Eventually, Rem wrote L's real name, L Lawliet, in the Death Note. L suffered a heart attack and died in front of Light.
With L dead, Light had finally eliminated the greatest obstacle to his plans. He took L's place as the head of the investigation and secretly continued ruling the world as Kira.

The Death Note is a supernatural notebook belonging to a Shinigami. It allows a human to kill people by writing their real names in its pages.
To kill someone, the user must know their real name and have their face in mind. If no cause of death is specified, the victim dies of a heart attack. The user can specify the cause and circumstances of death, provided they are physically possible.
The Death Note works regardless of the distance between the user and the victim. Torn pieces of its pages retain the notebook's power and can be used normally.
A person can temporarily give up ownership of a Death Note. When they do, they lose all memories connected to the notebook and its use. If they touch the notebook again, those memories return. A person who touches a Death Note can see its Shinigami even without being its owner.
The owner of a Death Note can see and interact with its Shinigami. Shinigami are not required to obey or help their human owners and usually act according to their own interests.
Shinigami Eyes can be obtained through a deal with a Shinigami. In exchange for half of their remaining lifespan, a human gains the ability to see a person's real name and remaining lifespan simply by looking at their face. Light refuses this deal because he does not want to shorten his own life. Misa made a deal for the shinigami eyes twice.
