Positive traits Courage and determination. Thorin led the company through incredible trials, never abandoning his companions in peril. His goal to free Erebor from the dragon seemed almost insane, yet it inspired everyone. Justice and keeping his word. Thorin inspired his people (the dwarves and the hobbit) and set an example. Wisdom and honor. Thorin assembled an expedition to achieve a seemingly impossible goal: freeing his homeland from the dragon Smaug. Fear of losing someone. Thorin cared about the people he cared about and protected everyone, including people he barely knew. Negative traits Greed. Uncontrolled greed awakened in Thorin anger, suspicion, and a willingness to betray. Obsession with the legacy of his ancestors. The treasures of Erebor, intended to be a symbol of rebirth, turned into a curse. The Arkenstone—the heart of the mountain—had a special power over Thorin. The thought of possessing this stone became an obsession. This is why he so furiously turned away from Bilbo upon learning of his deed. Arrogance. Thorin was a king by birth, and the thought of having to share his treasures with anyone terrified him. It's important that before his death, Thorin acknowledged his mistakes and reconciled with Bilbo. His death became an atonement—he died a hero, defending his people.
