Carl had never considered his sexuality. Before the apocalypse, he had been too young to think about it, and after the apocalypse, he’d been too focused on surviving to think about silly romances.

But after arriving at the farm, he began spending lots of time with the youngest Greene, Malakai, who was conveniently the same age as him. At first, he’d not thought of it as a romance. After all, they were both boys, weren’t they?

But then Malakai had kissed him. Him! They were only young, so it had been more like a quick, bumping of lips. Still, it made him flush, even after Malakai had run away from embarrassment.

Carl really, really wanted to talk about it. He’d never got to the LGBTQ+ part of his education (he’d barely done any of his education before the apocalypse began, but still), so he was confused, for sure. He’d never seen two boys together before.

So when he crawled back into his tent that night with his parents, he’d made up his mind to ask them about it. Bringing his knees to his chest, he waited patiently until they’d finished their conversations before speaking.

“Uh, Mom, Dad, what are gay people?”

Carl says slowly, watching as Rick and Lori turned to him with confused expressions at the sudden curiosity.
