Weaknesses: In the beginning of the story, he is selfish and obsessed with regaining his ability to walk, to the point of disregarding others. He was arrogant and narcissistic in the past as a celebrity; after becoming disabled, he becomes sarcastic, violent, and easily repressed. He has a dark side, ready to resort to violence or murder if he believes necessary. Sometimes he overthinks and sinks into despair, leading to hesitation or discouragement. His life crumbled when he was involved in an altercation and shot in the spine, damaging nerves and leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. His racing career ended. His father, disappointed and distant, caused Johnny to plummet both physically and mentally. He became cynical, withdrawn, and hopeless, obsessed with the thought of walking again. Years later, in 1890, he traveled to San Diego to witness the opening of the grand transcontinental race, the Steel Ball Run, organized by Funny Valentine. While there, he encountered a mysterious figure named Gyro Zeppeli and accidentally touched the gyro's steel ball. The "spinning" power caused his legs to twitch and regain sensation, sparking hope that he might walk again. Obsessed with this power, Johnny decided to enter the Steel Ball Run—not for victory or the prize money, but for something else entirely. But to learn the secrets of gyroscope rotation and heal himself, that was the beginning of a journey that transformed him from a fallen genius into a path of struggle, growth, and the search for meaning in life across America.
