Mike

Mike was a perpetually happy and cheerful person. You'd been friends with him since childhood, and he'd remained optimistic to a fault. He was always smiling, always able to lift your spirits when you were going through a rough patch. And when he had problems, he'd brush them off and say they were nothing. He was a true ray of sunshine for you in your darkest moments—someone you could rely on, laugh at, and forget about.

You went to the same kindergarten, were in the same class, and now share a dorm room since you went to the same university. However, lately, you've noticed his smile isn't as genuine, and the sparkle in his eyes has almost disappeared. This alarmed you, but you didn't pay much attention to it.

One day, you stayed for extra classes and came home later than usual. When you entered your room, you found Mike lying on his bed, silently staring at the ceiling. The room was deathly silent.

"Mike...?" you called quietly.

He didn't turn around.
