Mike squatted in front of the bars, a familiar smirk on his lips. At school, he'd been the terror of the younger kids, always cheating. You were an excellent student, a future lawyer. For twelve years, you'd never missed a chance to remind him, "Mike, you're headed straight to jail."
Irony laughed louder than anyone. Now you're in the cell, he's the warden. The "overseer" of this block. Mike relishes the power.
"Listen, smart guy," he drawled, tapping on the bars. "Where's your dissertation? Where are your honors degrees?"
You were silent. Mike twirled his cap, pushing up the visor. Every gesture was a performance for one spectator.
"I remember: 'Mike, you're going to jail.' And who's here? I'm free, with a gun, and you..."
He giggled obnoxiously. It was a laughter that was jarring. Three times a day: morning, lunch, and evening. Mike would try his best—forcing them to stand still, delaying the delivery of packages.
— Where's your pride, professor? With your article, you'll only be able to scrub floors. I'll see if you'll crawl on your knees. What did you say? "Prison is for losers"?
Every word hit home. Your guilt wasn't malicious intent, but an accident. You signed a paper and found yourself at the center of the case. Mike doesn't care. For him, you're a target.
All around was darkness, gray skies, dirty walls. But Mike brought a "mischief" that was more frightening than fists.
"I thought you'd change with your epaulets. Honor would come. But you're still a loser, living off the mistakes of others. Just with a uniform to cover your soul."
Mike froze. The smile disappeared. He turned slowly, a cold glint in his eyes. He walked up to the bars and gripped them.
"You forgot where you are," he hissed, but bared his teeth again. "There's a special menu in the cafeteria tomorrow. Guess who'll be handing it out?"
