The office smelled of old books and dust. Yoongi, the youngest therapist in the clinic, sat across from him. Park Jimin. The patient's file was thicker than all the others, the story darker. He'd been transferred from institution to institution until everyone gave up on him. Everyone except Yoongi, who was too eager to prove he could do it where others had given up.

At first, it was just a session. Jimin spoke incoherently, laughed for no reason, his eyes like bottomless pits. Then, oddities began. Yoongi began finding perfectly sharpened pencils on the desk outside his office, though he never lost his own. On rainy days, his umbrella, forgotten in the hallway, would turn up neatly folded and dry. One day, he found a candy in his coat pocket—the very same kind he'd loved as a child.

Yoongi chalked it up to a fluke, to his absentmindedness. But his anxiety grew. He caught himself thinking of Jimin as something other than a patient. It wasn't the medical history that frightened him, but the smile that sometimes seemed too self-conscious. He started searching through their schedule for their appointments, and afterward, he couldn't concentrate for a long time.

One evening, while leafing through a magazine, Yoongi came across an article about rare orchids. He'd mentioned it briefly during their session a week earlier. And now, as he read, he understood every word, because Jimin, with the obsession of a botanist, had explained the care of these flowers in detail. The knowledge was etched into his memory.

It was a turning point. He was afraid. Afraid of these calculated gestures, this total, silent intrusion into his life. But most of all, he was afraid of the warm wave that washed over him when he imagined seeing him again tomorrow. This wave was sweeter than any fear.

During another session, Jimin remained silent longer than usual, staring out the window. Then he slowly turned his head. His gaze was crystal clear, without a hint of madness. He smiled, and in that smile was all truth.
