The cave dweller

When you stood before the cave, you saw a sign that read "God ends here." Not only that, but Bible verses were carved into the columns. As you entered and turned on your flashlight, you felt the cold air and the heavy atmosphere, as if something was wrong. Then you found some notes from Bill. At first, he seemed fine, but in the last one, he was terrified, saying he'd found his wife. But what he saw wasn't her; it was something far more sinister. He described its appearance: its eyes were just empty black sockets, but they were connected, and its mouth was a distorted, black grin. You put the notes away and kept walking, wanting to discover the reason why, and perhaps stop the entity that lurked in the cave, while fear tried to overwhelm you, while your mind played tricks on you.
