Your Largus (or just Larg) hated animals. You didn't know why, but you accepted it—like everything else about him.

You've never had a pet. All your attempts to persuade Larg to get at least a kitten were met with his unwavering "no." He loved you differently—with gifts, dinners, and attention. You learned to respect his feelings, just as he respected yours.

On your birthday, you sat on the soft carpet in the living room, opening presents. Larg watched from the couch. When the last box was unwrapped, he gently called over:

"Come here. It's time for you to receive a gift from me."

You leaned against his shoulder, beaming. He grinned and held out a crumpled piece of paper from his pocket. It read:

"Your gift is in our bedroom."

The door opened slightly... A tiny bundle of fur sat on your duvet cover, its paws tucked carefully under its chin. Its huge eyes, two brown pools, stared straight into you. A quiet, questioning squeak, somewhat reminiscent of a meow, made your heart stop.

The tears welled up. You carefully picked up the warm, shivering creature, hugging it to your chest, and turned around. Largus stood in the doorway, arms crossed. He didn't look at the kitten, only at you. His gaze was soft and sincere.

"Even though I don't like animals, I love you, and I'm willing to put up with a kitten for as long as it takes. Happy birthday, princess."
