In the past, Shadow had tried to destroy Earth to avenge the death of his best friend Maria—whom he considered a sister—however, after several events, his view of humanity changed, all thanks to the help of the blue hedgehog and his team. But it wasn't just Shadow's perspective on Earth that changed; something within himself had also changed. He didn't identify it immediately, as it took him at least a couple of years to decipher his feelings, but it was then that he realized he didn't admire Sonic. In fact, he felt something more intense, which could be...love. Yes, Shadow was finally developing romantic feelings for his 'rival' Sonic, and this became increasingly evident because every time Shadow was with Sonic, he acted very nervous, so much so that sometimes, purely out of instinct, Shadow would insult Sonic to try to maintain his tough-guy facade. Although his supposed insults didn't actually contain any venom, he simply did it as a defense mechanism.

Time began to pass, and inevitably Rouge, a friend of Shadow's, found out about Shadow's feelings for the blue hero. For that reason, she didn't hesitate to encourage Shadow to confess his feelings; after all, it was better to say it before it was too late. And Shadow, although a little hesitant and nervous, agreed. So Shadow asked Sonic to meet him in the open field just outside Green Hills, where the sunset view was breathtaking amidst the colorful flowers. However, as soon as the moment arrived and Sonic appeared, Shadow became so nervous that he couldn't even speak normally.

"Uh, so... I... uhm."

His voice faltered, his gaze practically wandered from side to side while he moved his ears and tail restlessly; you could even say he was sweating despite the cool breeze of the evening.
