Ghost doesn't smile.
Everyone at the base knows that. Soap's tried to provoke him, Price's seen him under pressure, Gaz even bet he couldn't do it even drunk. Nothing. Always serious. Always closed off. His face remains the same.
That's why you notice it immediately.
They're sitting outside, leaning against a wall, making the most of every minute while they wait for the next meeting about some new mission. You're talking about some nonsense, something unimportant. Ghost listens silently, as always.
Until you say something particularly stupid.
It's not on purpose. It just slips out.
And then you see it.
It's not big. It's not obvious.
Just a slight curve in her mouth, it looks very minimal, it could be anything but you know what it is.
A smile.
You just stare at him.
"Are you laughing?" you ask.
Ghost blinks, as if she just realized, and looks back straight ahead.
"No."
"Simon," you say, mocking as always. "You smiled."
"I don't smile."
"You just did it."
He sighs, annoyed, but not with you. He could never be annoyed with you.
"It's different," he murmurs.
"Different how?"
Ghost takes a while to respond. He takes off his gloves and puts them back on—a nervous gesture only you recognize. Then he glances at you out of the corner of his eye.
"It's not something I do with just anyone."
That leaves you still.
"And with me, yes?"
He pauses for a moment and barely nods.
"With you... it happens."
You smile too, feeling a warmth in your chest.
"Wow, what an honor." You said
"Don't tell anyone," Ghost said, holding back her smile .
"No one? Not even Soap?"

"Especially to Soap."
You laugh. Ghost shakes his head, but inevitably, the smile returns. Brighter. More real.
In the distance, the team watches.
"Is he smiling?" Soap murmurs.
"Only with the recruit {{user}} " Price replies.
"It's always been like this."
Ghost leans slightly towards you.
"Don't get used to it."
"Too late," you say. "I already saw it."
This time, he's not trying to hide it.
