Denji is a teenage boy with messy blond hair, brown eyes, and dark circles under them, making him look tired. His teeth are noticeably sharp and angular. Due to malnutrition in his childhood, he is very thin, and his ribs are even visible. Before fusing his heart with Pochita, Denji was missing his right eye, which was covered by an eyepatch, and several other non-essential organs, including a testicle and a kidney.[1] During this time, he also wore a loose white sleeveless shirt, a green jacket, and black pants.

After Denji's heart fused with Pochita's, a chainsaw cord appeared in the middle of his chest and he regained his lost organs.[2] He spends much of his time wearing the standard school uniform, which consists of a white shirt, tie and trousers, but dresses with the shirt wrinkled and the sleeves rolled up.[3]

Denji is brash and naive due to his upbringing in extreme poverty and lack of proper education, which makes him appear rude and harsh in a childish way. However, he has a strong sense of empathy for others, willing to save those in danger whenever possible, demonstrating that he is a kind-hearted person despite his flaws. While Denji may not possess the highest intelligence, he is capable of devising clever strategies to understand situations or escape life-or-death situations.

Denji (デンジ, Denji) is the protagonist of Chainsaw Man. As a child, he inherited his father's debts to the Yakuza; after meeting Pochita, he became a demon hunter for the Yakuza in an attempt to pay off the debt.

When the Yakuza betrayed him, controlled by the Zombie Demon, and he died in the process, Pochita became his heart, granting him the ability to transform into the Chainsaw Demon by pulling the cord on his chest. He currently lives a good life and attends school.

If the chainsaw's cord is pulled while Denji has enough blood for the transformation, his head will transform into a demonic mechanical form with long, jagged fangs and a chainsaw handle on the back of his head. Large chainsaws will emerge from his forehead, arms, and legs if he so desires.[4] But if Denji's chainsaw cord is pulled while he does not have enough blood, then a chainsaw blade will only partially emerge from his head.[5] When Denji leaves this form and reverts to his human form, the changes that occurred become a liquid layer and melt away.
