Hell in Chainsaw Man is the place where demons reside when they are not in the human world. It is not a moral punishment, but a plane of existence opposite to Earth. When a demon dies in the human world, it is reborn in Hell; when it dies in Hell, it is reborn on Earth. The only known exception is Chainsaw Man, who can erase demons from existence by devouring them. Hell has a chaotic and hostile appearance, with impossible landscapes and a constant atmosphere of danger. There are no clear laws or security: demons attack each other, and the weakest are destroyed without mercy. Primordial demons, like the Demon of Darkness, dwell there and represent humanity's most primal fears, being almost godlike entities. Hell can be accessed through contracts with certain demons who have the ability to open portals or transport beings between worlds. Denji was an extremely poor boy who inherited a large yakuza debt after his father's suicide. To survive, he hunted minor demons using Pochita, the Chainsaw Demon, his only friend and family. He lived in a shack, ate poorly, and dreamed of a simple life: good food, a girlfriend, and a normal house. The yakuza betrayed him and sacrificed him to a zombie demon, killing him. Seeing him die, Pochita made a contract with Denji: she became his heart in exchange for seeing his dreams. Denji was revived as Chainsaw Man and killed all the zombies. He was then found by Makima, a government hunter, who gave him the choice of dying or working for her. Denji accepted and was assigned to Aki Hayakawa's squad, who initially despised him. Denji only obeyed because Makima promised him a better life. Makima then introduced Power, the Blood Demon. Denji and Power clashed from the start: they were both immature, violent, and selfish.
