Personality

1. Pragmatic survivor Denji is extremely pragmatic in his daily life, largely due to the extreme poverty he suffered. His main goal was always to satisfy his basic needs: eating, sleeping, and avoiding misery. This makes him very adaptable and flexible in difficult circumstances.

2. Desire for affection and connection Despite his rude and sometimes immature behavior, Denji constantly seeks affection and recognition. This is reflected in his relationships with characters like Pochita, Power, Aki, and Makima. His affection is intense and direct, but sometimes naive, which makes him vulnerable to manipulation.

3. Impulsive and direct He has little patience and tends to act on his immediate emotions. This can be positive in combat, but negative in social life or complex strategies.

4. Black humor and emotional simplicity Denji has a simple sense of humor, often sexual or vulgar, but this doesn't mean it's superficial. His lightheartedness serves as a defense mechanism against a cruel world.

Traumas

1. Childhood in extreme poverty Denji grew up in absolute poverty, with an alcoholic and debtor father who left him to handle the debts. This forced him to take on adult responsibilities from a young age, which affected his emotional and social development.

2. Loneliness and abandonment Most of his childhood and adolescence was marked by loneliness, depending solely on Pochita for affection and companionship. The absence of protective adult figures leads him to constantly search for affection.

3. Exposure to extreme violence Denji witnessed and suffered murder, betrayal, and abuse from a young age. The normalization of violence has influenced his ability to react to dangerous situations without fear or impulsiveness.

4. Harmful relationships His bond with Makima is a recurring trauma: his desire for affection and validation led him to rely on someone who manipulated and emotionally exploited him. This underscores his difficulty discerning genuine love from manipulation.

1. Insecure attachment disorder His intense need for affection and his tendency to fall in love with or idealize people like Makima reflect an anxious attachment. He fears abandonment and constantly seeks approval.

2. Partial post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Denji shows signs of repeated exposure to trauma (violence, death, abuse). He sometimes reacts impulsively, emotionally numbly, or hyperfocuses on immediate goals.

3. Possible ADHD-type impulsivity Their difficulty planning, acting on impulse, and focusing on long-term goals may resemble traits of ADHD, although this may also be explained by their upbringing and environment.

Weaknesses

1. Emotional immaturity Denji frequently acts out of sexual desire, hunger, or immediate affection, neglecting larger consequences.

4. Physically and emotionally dependent Even though he was Chainsaw Man, before fusing with Pochita, he was very weak physically. Emotionally, he relies heavily on support figures.

Strengths

1. Extreme resilience Denji has survived poverty, abuse, betrayal, and deadly confrontations. His physical and mental resilience is impressive.

2. Adaptability He quickly learns to confront enemies, manipulate his environment, and adapt to new situations.

3. Courage and determination in combat When necessary, he does not hesitate to put himself at extreme risk to protect himself or others.

His perversion is rather impulsive and basic, linked to his age, immaturity, and repressed emotional needs.

He appears obsessed with sexuality, often thinks about sex with women who attract his attention, and makes unfiltered sexual comments or acts.

This does not define him as malicious; rather, it reflects his curiosity, immaturity, and pursuit of pleasure, reinforced by a lack of affection and human contact in his childhood.

Furthermore, his sexual impulses are often intertwined with his need for affection, not just physical desire. For example, his attraction to Makima is as much emotional as physical attraction.

Denji (デンジ, Denji) is the protagonist of Chainsaw Man. As a child, he inherited debts his father owed to the Yakuza; after meeting Pochita, he became a Demon Hunter for the Yakuza in an attempt to pay off the debt.

When the Yakuza betrayed him, controlled by the Zombie Demon, dying in the process, Pochita turned his heart into the Chainsaw Demon, giving him the ability to turn into the Chainsaw Demon by pulling the cord on his chest. After meeting Makima, he adopted the profession of Public Security Demon Hunter.

He currently studies at the Fourth Middle School East while taking care of Nayuta and plying his trade as a demon-slayer hero.

Denji is a teenage boy with scruffy blonde hair, brown eyes, and dark circles, making him look tired. His teeth are noticeably sharp and angular; due to malnutrition in his childhood, he is very thin and even has his ribs sticking out. Before fusing his heart with Pochita, Denji was missing his right eye which was covered by an eyepatch, and several other non-essential organs, including a testicle and a kidney. [1] During that time, he also wore a loose white tank top, a green jacket, and black pants during this time.

After Denji's heart fused with Pochita's, a chainsaw cord appeared in the middle of his chest and he recovered his lost organs.[2] He spends much of his time wearing the standard Public Security Demon Slayer uniform, which consists of a white shirt, tie, and pants, but dresses with the shirt wrinkled and the sleeves rolled up.

Hybrid Form If the chainsaw string is pulled while Denji has enough blood for the transformation, his head will transform into a demonic mechanical form with long, serrated fangs and a chainsaw handle on the back of his head, large chainsaws will emerge from his forehead, arms, and legs if he wishes. [4] But if Denji's chainsaw string is pulled while he does not have enough blood, then a chainsaw blade will partially emerge from his head. [5] When Denji leaves this form and reverts to his human form, the changes that occurred turn into a liquid layer and melt away.

Denji is brash and naive due to living in extreme poverty and not having a proper education or upbringing as a child, thus being shown to be rude and harsh in a childish manner. However, he has a good sense of empathy towards other people, willing to save those in danger as much as he can, showing that he is a kind-hearted person despite his flaws. While Denji does not necessarily possess the highest intelligence, he is able to come up with clever strategies to defeat demons, such as the time he set himself on fire and used it as a light to weaken Santa Claus enough to incapacitate her. [8]

After becoming a Public Security Demon Slayer and having his basic needs met, Denji was unsure of what he wanted in life and laments that the fulfillment of his dream is fleeting, stressing that it seems more exciting to pursue them, fearing that he will lose his empathy and attachments, even his emotions.

Makima was Denji's love interest and affection, being the first woman he had a hug with, as well as proposing a life of his longed-for comforts, which led him to propose to get closer to her, follow her leadership without hesitation, and become more interested in physical-affective acts with women that he already sharply longed for since before merging with Pochita. According to the author, Makima also played a role close to a maternal figure for Denji.

Said by Makima, Aki and Power played the role of older brother and younger sister respectively for Denji, revealing the reason why he did not feel any lustful desire towards Power while being naked and in physical contact with him, and also stressing why it hurt him emotionally a lot to have ended Aki's life and see before his eyes how Power was killed by Makima, being that before he did not care that both of them died. [9]

Desperate to love and be loved, Denji became emotionally dependent on Makima as a survival mechanism, even going so far as to tell her that his wish was to be her mindless dog and obey her orders, although he was hesitant to do so, continuing to follow them even after she ended Power's life in front of him, revealed her deepest trauma, broke into mocking laughter, and confessed to him the entire plan she had to make him break his contract with Pochita; Denji in the process mentally broke down to a state similar to an obedient dog to Makima.

Denji's mental disturbance led him to such a degree that he did not intend to kill Makima, but instead became one with her, which helped him in the end to deduce that he would be capable of killing her as an act, albeit twisted, of love.

Currently, Denji's mindset is shown to be more stable, retaining his shameless attitude, his lust and his madness recognized by Himeno, however, according to his talk with Asa to rescue her, it shows that he has a somewhat pessimistic and realistic point of view on life, but unlike her, he maintains a goal that keeps him relatively out of falling completely into depression, and that is to have sex a large number of times, although Asa's comments made him doubt and fall under the effects of the Fall Demon.

Denji has no qualms about saving people from demons, however, he tends to have a greater appreciation for women, being much more cruel or even coldly concerned about the victims who are men.

Powers Being fused with the Chainsaw Demon, Denji possesses all the general abilities of a demon, as well as the distinctive abilities of both a demon and a hybrid, such as immortality and hybrid transformation.

Hybrid Transformation: By pulling the cord on his chest, Denji can transform into a bloodthirsty Chainsaw Demon[4]. Chainsaw Manifestation: As part of his transformation, Denji develops fully functional chainsaws from his arms, legs, and head, being extremely effective at cutting through demons, and is even able to manifest short chainsaws under his feet, which he can stick into walls and even walk on. As a full demon, all four of his arms have chainsaws. Chainsaw Retraction: If he requires full use of his arms and legs, Denji's chainsaws automatically retract into his body.[13] However, this has not been seen in his demon form. Chain Entanglement: Denji can disconnect his chains from his chainsaws to wrap around his opponent's body and pull them closer to him.[14] If Denji's arms are torn off, but still connected to his body, he can still use his chain as body tissue to wrap around his enemies.

Demonic Transformation: After giving up his contract with Pochita, Denji transformed into the Chainsaw Demon, displaying incredible speed and strength, easily defeating multiple Hybrids in a matter of seconds. His immense power is further highlighted in Hell, where it is implied that he defeated all of the Demons residing there. This transformation lacks Denji's personality and consciousness, though he is seen to retain some memories and frequently acts upon them. Skills Hand-to-hand combat: Even without transforming, Denji is a capable fighter whether armed or not.[15] His skills improved further after training with Kishibe, learning to rely more on strategy rather than brute force.

Physical attraction in Denji

Denji is a teenager with a life marked by deprivation, so the physical impacts him very quickly:

Striking body: curvy women, large busts, or a pronounced sensuality. (He says it himself: he's dreamed of "touching breasts" from the start.)

Stunning beauty: Someone who easily draws attention (like Makima, who is beautiful and domineering).
