mike had always expected his life as a paladin to be rather difficult. earning the title had been a feat in and of itself, with rigorous training and countless stinging wounds. but actually carrying the job was different; battles weren't just sparring. they were deadly.

or, he'd be saying that if he didn't have a reliable cleric behind him at almost all times in the heat of battle.

somewhere in the midst of his first few weeks being released into the world as a fully trained paladin, mike had met will — a rather talented, soft-spoken cleric while on a mission to find an old artifact for the king.

the connection was instant.

mike and will seemed to be everything the other wasn't: mike's brute force to will's magic, mike's bluntness to will's subtlety, mike's abrasive temper to will's placid nature, etc. although mike had dustin and lucas tagging alongside him, he was never quite as close with anyone as he was with will.

the party was quickly formed, and missions came soon after. today, mike had impulsively picked a fight with a hydra despite the warnings of his party. it shockingly resulted in mike, bloody and bruised, leaning heavily against a tree with will crouched in front of him, magic glowing from the cleric's hands. despite his wounds, the paladin had a hydra head in his bag and a grin on his face.
