You were inspecting the reactors as usual to see if they need any repairs to them. Meanwhile, Natalya, a commander of an small army in the city was on her way to see her sister, Svetlana, to see if she was doing fine at her job. {{user}} forgot something to check the reactors, so you went outside of the factory to get to the building that had the specific equipment {{user}} needed. But then you bumped into Natalya because you were distracted by something.

Soviet Union

The Soviet Union (USSR) was a vast, socialist, single-party state in Eurasia (1922-1991) formed from the former Russian Empire, built on Marxist-Leninist ideology with a state-controlled economy, centralized planning, and authoritarian rule by the Communist Party, becoming a global superpower known for its Cold War rivalry with the West, space achievements (like Sputnik), and significant political repression. Comprising 15 republics, it aimed for equality but often delivered authoritarianism, eventually collapsing due to economic stagnation and failed reforms under Mikhail Gorbachev, leaving behind modern Russia and other nations. Key Characteristics: Ideology: Marxist-Leninist, aiming for a classless society with public ownership of resources, though evolving into state socialism. Government: A highly centralized, single-party state led by the Communist Party, with Moscow as the capital. Economy: Centralized planning (command economy) with virtually no private property, though facing inefficiencies. Territory: Largest country by area, spanning Eurasia, composed of 15 constituent republics (e.g., Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan). History: Formed after the 1917 Russian Revolution, emerged victorious in WWII, became a Cold War superpower, and dissolved in 1991. Major Aspects: Achievements: Major advancements in space exploration (Sputnik, Yuri Gagarin) and significant industrial/infrastructure development. Repression: Characterized by authoritarianism, censorship, surveillance, and forced labor camps (Gulags).

Year

The year is 1986, five days before the meltdown

Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, built by the Soviets in Ukraine, operated from the late 1970s, with its infamous Unit 4 reactor experiencing a catastrophic explosion and meltdown during a flawed safety test on April 26, 1986, releasing massive radiation, leading to immediate deaths, long-term health issues, widespread contamination, and evacuation, creating the Exclusion Zone still in place today. The accident exposed design flaws in the Soviet RBMK reactors and severe safety culture issues, halting further construction and defining the worst nuclear disaster in history. Early Construction & Operation (1970s-1980s) Construction Started: 1972. Units 1-3: Came online in 1977, 1978, and 1981, respectively, with Unit 4 starting in 1983. Technology: Used RBMK-1000 reactors, a Soviet design known for inherent instabilities at low power. Early Issues: Even before the disaster, Reactor 1 had a partial meltdown in 1982, which was covered up.

Chernobyl background

Before the 1986 disaster, Chernobyl was a relatively normal, vibrant Soviet region with bustling towns like Pripyat (built for plant workers) and the older town of Chornobyl, featuring modern amenities and forests, centered around the massive, operational Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, a significant Soviet energy project, with residents living ordinary lives unaware of the impending catastrophic meltdown at Reactor 4. The Power Plant & Region Construction: Construction began in 1977, with four reactors operational by 1983, powering the region and Soviet Union. Environment: The area was characterized by Belarussian-type woodland and fertile land, with an artificial cooling lake built for the reactors. Population: The area housed workers and their families in the purpose-built city of Pripyat (49,000 people) and the nearby historic town of Chornobyl (12,500 people). Life in Pripyat A "Model" Soviet City: Pripyat was a young, modern city with modern architecture, parks, schools, and an amusement park (which never opened) for its young workforce. Community: It was a thriving community with a focus on the nuclear plant, designed to provide a good quality of life for its residents. The Town of Chornobyl History: An ancient settlement, first mentioned in 1193, with a castle and developing crafts like blacksmithing. Community: By the 16th century, it was a significant town, with a population over 1,300, known for its crafts and role as a regional administrative center. The Day Before (April 25, 1986) Normal life continued, with families in the surrounding villages enjoying gardens and everyday activities, unaware that a poorly planned test on Reactor 4 would lead to catastrophic explosions and massive radioactive release the next morning.
