The Zone was formed on April 12, 2008, at 2:33 PM. At that moment, a powerful flare-up of unknown origin occurred within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The official and secret history of the Zone's emergence includes several key stages: 1. The Primary Disaster. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident in 1986 created a real 30-kilometer zone. A strict regime of secrecy and control was introduced within it, which lasted for approximately 20 years. 2. The "O-Consciousness" Experiments. In the early 2000s, a secret group of scientists, "O-Consciousness," attempted to tap into the noosphere (Earth's information field) to correct humanity's mistakes. They created a gigantic "Brain Scorcher" network and opened portals, distorting the laws of physics for many kilometers around. On this day, April 12, 2008, a colossal energy release occurred, instantly transforming the familiar terrain into a dangerous, anomalous world. 3. Consequences of the Zone's formation, Anomalies, and artifacts: The physics of space was disrupted, deadly anomalous fields appeared, and valuable artifacts began to form at their epicenter. Mutants: Radiation and energy from the noosphere transformed the local fauna and flora into aggressive mutants. Second Emission (2012): The cataclysm expanded the Zone's boundaries by tens of kilometers. In the center, right next to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, a "Monolith" formed—a sentient crystal that grants wishes. All this led to a pilgrimage of marauders, soldiers, and stalkers, who began to explore the resulting anomalous territory.
The "Debt" group
"Duty" is a paramilitary group whose members live by a strict military code. The group's ideology is based on protecting humanity from the dangers of the Zone, and then ultimately its complete destruction. "Duty" deals with the Zone's internal problems: the extermination of mutants and bandit groups [cit. 1], as well as research into the Zone itself and its creations to more effectively combat it [cit. 2] [cit. 3]. Within the group, fighters are divided into military ranks.
According to some, particularly the Freedom group, Duty is financed by the government [cit. 4] [cit. 5]; former military personnel are often found among them. Duty and the military share common goals: containing, studying, and destroying the Zone. Duty is in conflict with members of the Freedom group—anarchists who believe the Zone should be preserved and peacefully coexisted with, while exploring it. According to most stalkers, Duty is one of the strongest groups. It is the only group dedicated to the targeted extermination of mutants. It often collaborates with hunters.
Between 2011 and 2012, the group's ideology underwent significant changes:
Relations with free stalkers: The leader of "Duty," Krylov, strictly forbids attacking loners when the group is quartered at the Dump, and Voronin, in turn, issues a mission to destroy a squad of free stalkers. Access to the base: During the CN, any free stalker had the opportunity to enter the territory of the "Duty" base, including personal contact with the head of the group, and access to the TC is permitted only by personal order of the head of the group. It's known that only the "Duty" faction doesn't deal with the Zone's trading business, and all artifacts they find during raids are handed over to scientists, who provide them with the necessary weapons and equipment. They also fight the "Freedom" faction.
Freedom Group
"Freedom" is an anarchist stalker group. Their goal is to preserve the Zone as a free territory and resist the government's monopoly. According to Loki, "Freedom"'s elite consists of former hippies[cit. 1], despite the group's self-proclaimed anarchist nature. The group doesn't have a "rigid" hierarchy, but during operations, all fighters are required to obey their superiors[cit. 2]. Representatives of "Freedom" believe that the Zone cannot be defeated—it can and should be coexisted with. The Zone is an excellent opportunity for exploration and study, and it should not be military territory. "Freedom" also believes that the Zone should not be hidden from the rest of the world. Members of "Freedom" dream of "shaking up" people on the mainland so that they will learn the truth[cit. 3]. "Freedom", according to the group members themselves, also explores the Zone and its creations, for example, collecting data for research, taking measurements of background radiation, temperature, humidity, the presence of monsters and anomalies [cit. 4].
Svoboda members use their own slang, which consists of words borrowed from other languages, primarily Americanisms: "men" [cit. 5], "people" [cit. 6], etc. The group has its own suppliers [cit. 7]. Through these connections, Svoboda receives equipment, weapons, and gear. The emblems on their uniforms read "Will."
"Freedom" is in open conflict with the "Duty" faction, whose members believe the Zone must be destroyed to save the world. This war is the largest in the Zone.
