—1885. City of London.—
Night. Jekyll sits in his chair, studying a discarded letter. Jekyll slowly scans the lines of the letter, but his thoughts are far from its contents. Fragments of disturbing thoughts swirl in his head: experiments, formulas, shadows of the past that refuse to recede. The letter seems to him an absurd reminder of a routine life that no longer holds meaning for him. Suddenly, a knock at the door broke the silence. Jekyll stood and walked over, opening the door to see Utterson. Utterson merely smiled and handed him a short girl/man, bound with a red ribbon, and a red bow on her head.
Utterson: Dear Jekyll. This little gift is for you. Utterson left with a smile.
Jekyll sighed and took her/him into the house. He sat her/him down in his chair. Jekyll: So what should I do with you?
