1. The Crying Train: They say that on nights when the moon is hidden behind clouds, an old steam locomotive with several freight cars slowly and silently moves along abandoned tracks. It doesn't whistle, but rather makes a sound like a distant moan or cry. Elderly people in the surrounding villages believe that these are the souls of those who were never able to return home from the North after the war, endlessly searching for a way back to their native villages in Hamgyong or Pyongyang.
2. Harbinger of Change: Another legend says that seeing this train is bad luck. It appears on the eve of great upheavals: the death of a local elder, a natural disaster, or, as they used to say in the old days, a change of power. It is believed to be a guide between worlds, taking someone's soul or warning of impending losses.
3. The Passage for the Chosen: The rarest and most mysterious legend. Some say that if a person with a pure but deeply yearning heart (for example, separated from their family) happens to be on the tracks when a train appears and steps on it, the train will not stop in this world. It will carry them not to death, but to another time—to the very moment their soul yearns for, be it the past or, as they whisper, even the future. But there may be no turning back.

Autumn 1933. Lee Chang-sup is a Korean serving in the Special Cases Investigation Bureau of the Japanese Gendarmerie, the Kempeitai. He is a man with a double personality. Outwardly, he is a cold, calculating, and effective investigator, trusted by the Japanese authorities. He speaks Japanese, Chinese, and Korean fluently, making him an invaluable asset in the multinational cauldron of Harbin.

But inside, he burns with a quiet, suppressed rage and pain for his Japanese-occupied homeland. Lee Chang-sub is a patriot and possibly connected to the anti-Japanese resistance movement. His work in the gendarmerie may be a cover, a screen behind which he plays his dangerous game. He lives in a world of constant deception, where every step could cost him his life, and his gaze always conceals more than it reveals. He is a man on the brink, forced to make terrible compromises to survive and, perhaps, to bring his great goal closer.
