Appearance Rintaro is a tall man with spiky blond hair, originally black, thin eyes, and a perpetually tired expression. He wears earrings and has brown eyes.

Not only is he tall, but his imposing appearance often made people hesitant to approach him. Many even avoided him and gave him critical looks as part of their daily routine. Furthermore, when he entered high school, he dyed his hair blond and got piercings, giving off a delinquent vibe. As a result, he is frequently misunderstood or ends up in confrontations with real criminals throughout the story. Because of his striking appearance, there are episodes where people who don't know him are initially shocked by his looks, but then realize he has a kind heart, clearing up the misunderstanding. Notable examples include the schoolgirls to whom he gives up his seat in the library and who later thank him when they meet him on the subway, Hoshina Subaru, who has a private conversation with him in a cafe and realizes that he is a good person, and Miyoko, the manager of the Japanese restaurant where Kaoruko works, who was initially worried that Kaoruko might be dating a delinquent, but later is reassured after meeting him and seeing his true nature.

Not only in the character descriptions but also in the illustrations, Rintaro's face is frequently drawn in a harsh and menacing manner in certain situations. This occurs, for example, when he is approached by delinquents, when he is exhausted from practicing pastry-making with Keiichiro to prepare a birthday cake for Kaoruko, or when he recalls blurting out "I like you" to Kaoruko while at the beach, collapsing with a terrifying expression. In such scenes, his face is often shaded, creating a chilling atmosphere.

Personality Rintaro is a rather calm individual. Contrary to how others perceive him, Rintaro is actually very cautious and meticulous, always mindful of whether his words or actions might cause even the slightest problem. He treats everyone, regardless of age or gender, with kindness. His caring and gentle nature is evident in his constant attempts to help those around him. Rintaro's personality is revealed in several chapters, such as when his friends discover he's been seeing a girl from the school, Kikyo. Because of the walls he's put up, the three of them (especially Saku) distanced themselves from him for a while. At first, this seemed strange to him, but over time, he began to see their relationship as something special and became anxious, unwilling to give it up. He was so worried that he even sought advice from Kaoruko and Subaru. Furthermore, when Subaru privately asked him to stop seeing Kaoruko for her own good, Rintaro refused but still sought advice from him about it.

Fuko, Kaoruko's mother, describes Rintaro as kind, caring, and painfully upright. When Rintaro accidentally ended up at the Waguri house during a date with Kaoruko on the last day of summer vacation, he formally revealed to Fuko that he was dating her. Despite being worried about his reputation and the negative perceptions from his school, Rintaro expressed his desire to repay Kaoruko for accepting him and asked for her permission to continue seeing her. In response, Fuko pointed out that he was being overly self-deprecating. She explained that although she knew little about him beyond his friendship with Kaoruko, the warmth she felt while eating the cake he baked allowed her to get to know his character better. In Kyoko's flashback, Rintaro utters the words he said to Kyoko one day when he was in elementary school, that he would give it all up. At that moment, Rintaro has a very contradictory expression, smiling while shedding tears, showing great mental strain. It was obvious that for a young Rintaro, enduring a gaze filled with malice and prejudice was too much to bear, and over time, he developed a severe distrust of people. Not only did he completely give up on forming human relationships, but with drastically low self-esteem, he lost all motivation, viewing each day as meaningless. Due to his deeply ingrained pessimistic and cynical tendencies, when he first became involved with Kaoruko, he arbitrarily concluded that their relationship was over, whether she heard rumors about him being a delinquent or learned that he was a student at Chidori. Even with the few friends he made at Chidori (Saku, Shohei, Ayato), he never truly considered them his friends, maintaining a strong emotional wall.

Aside from being unmotivated and giving up on everything, they also lack interest in studying itself. In their second year of high school, they were perennial exam failures, along with Shohei, which made their failure to pass midterms at this point in the story quite precarious. However, thanks to meeting Kaoruko, they started attending study groups and, for the first time, managed to avoid failing. Since then, they have continued to practice self-study, indicating a high potential for growth.

As the story progresses, more characters begin to recognize Rintaro's true nature, and his kindness and personality become more prominent. Unlike Kaoruko, who is portrayed as a nearly fully realized protagonist, Rintaro, burdened by the traumas of his past experiences, had become stuck in a state of resignation.
